Collette, What info are you seeking on Ridgeways? I have a bit, there is more in the Powers, Early Settlers book. Ausburn or (Osburn) married into my family. He married the daughter of William Bridges. William Bridges sold him some land. I think it was before they were family. Dave Hunter Nicea@aol.com

Dave, This sheds a bright ray of light on what has been a nightmare for me. Two years ago I obtained this deed, and somehow was told it was in Cotton Hill township. The more I dug the less that seemed to add up with the facts of where people were. I have a red face, and owe everyone an apology for what I have posted about the Springfield Baptist church which was organized either between 1824-1827, or earlier, if this is true. Rather than make another mistake, I will try to determine this location precisely in Springfield township and then come back and correct myself. This time I will try to have all the pieces and correct information before I say too much. You have helped me clear up what would have been a big mistake, if it had not been caught, and I do thank you. Robert, Township 16 is Springfield Twp and included the town of Spfld. Cotton Hill appears to be in township 14. I'm looking at an 1876 map of Sangamon County. Section 17 would be slightly northwest of the Springfield of that day. (Going diagonal, it looks like there is one section between the northwest corner of Springfield and Section 17.) Technically without the Range, I couldn't say for sure where it is because that township number included everything from Illiopolis Twp on the east to Cartwright Twp on teh west, but with the Springfield reference it is probably Spfld twp. We have found a cemetery that the tombstones are mostly in the East west position. Then there are some going, about ten or so, the other way. They have not been vandalized and moved. Does anyone know of a reason for this. Marianne

Posted on: Sangamon County, Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Sangamon/1982 Surname: Ferril ------------------------- I am looking for the descendants of Nancy Tosh and Stephen Ferrill. He died in Springfield, Sangamon County, IL in 1824. Their children were born between 1799-1824. Only the last one, Jesse Asbury Ferrill was born in Sangamon County in 1824. The rest of the children: Melinda, Jonathan, Gabriel, Nancy, Edwin, Milton P., Stephen Sherman, Margaret, and Mary E. were born in VA. The family later moved to washington township, wapello county, IA.
The following is a legal description taken from a deed provided to me by IRAD, (Springfield office), and I am beginning to wonder if I have misinterpreted it. The date of this deed is April 1830. Is it possible that the numbering of the townships was different at that time? and that perhaps this is not Cotton Hill township as I have supposed, but some other? How should I go about finding out? Location: One acre from the S.E. 1/4 of Sec. 17 in Township 16, in the Springfield district, "commencing at a white oak tree on the bank of said Howell's Spring Branch." Thanks for any help from experts out there. Robert ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Make sure you double check the info in Early Settlers. I have found the vast majority of info to be correct, but have encountered some errors. Errors can lead you on a wild goose chase for years to come. Check the info against documented sources - census, marriage, property, probate, tax records and the like. In the early days of the county, Sangamon was much larger than it is now. It included parts of Macon, Christian, Logan and all of some other counties. Movement which seems to be within counties was actually still within the same county of the day. Check maps of the era to see where the bounderies were. Dave H Nicea@aol.com
Yes there is an index to Early Settlers. In some editions it is in the same volume, in others it is separate. I don't know what the current editions have tho. Dave H Nicea@aol.com
We've found that most of the reprints are even better than the originals - i.e., index, page numbers added, etc. When we redid the "Orange Judd Pictorial Directory of Rochester Township, Sangamon County, IL" we added Table of Contents, Index, maps and page numbers which the original did not have.
