On the 1874 Sangamon Atlas there is a church shown in Cartwright Twp. NE 1/4 of Sec 25. This is approx. 1 mile or so from Spring Creek and is about 2 miles north of Old Jacksonville Rd. From what I can make of it, it appears to be about eight miles west of Springfield (present day). I can't verify that this is the Baptist Church, perhaps someone else can? It is still on the 1914 Atlas, but not on present day Atlas. At 04:52 PM 02/17/2001 -0600, you wrote: > I'm working on sketches of several early Baptist churches in >Sangamon County. I'm working on sketches of several early Baptist churches in Sangamon County. One of them is Spring Creek. It was supposed to be located about eight miles west of Springfield (1861 Springfield) and one mile north of the road to Jacksonville. I haven't been able to locate the precise spot or find a deed. Some of the early members, whose name was Kendall, later moved to the county where I now live (Hancock). William Kendall (1770-1845) is buried in Hancock Co., in the Providence cemetery, but was probably a charter member of Spring Creek church. I have the following names as members of Spring Creek Church: Brice W. Alsbury (joined in Nov. 1828, ordained as a minister by another church, later, I believe). Robert Bagby (already an ordained minister when he joined in about 1841 or 1842; he was also a member at one time of the church at Lincoln's New Salem. I have a sketch he wrote of himself not long before his death, and his obituary). Daniel Brundage, James A. Brundage, William H. Brundage. A. Burnett Thomas Burnett Nathan Butler George Davenport (1781-1845, came to Sangamon Co. in 1819). A. Foutch (this may be the one born in 1797, who was one of the commissioners at the time of the building of the courthouse, which became the Old State Capitol) Harmon Haggard Allen Hamilton William P. Hazlett John B. Hinman Tandy James (not sure of spelling - very difficult to read on my microfilm) Benjamin Kendall, Barzillia Kendall, John H. Kendall, William Kendall Jr., William Kendall Sr. J. Martin Stephen Pool J. F. Pyatt S. Ray, and T. Ray Lewis Robertson Elder J. H. Posted on: Sangamon County, Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Sangamon/1993 Surname: HINDS, TROXEL, SHANNON ------------------------- I think there may be a connection between the families we are researching. The Troxel family lived in Sangamon County between 1840 and 1856. Their son Charles P. Troxel married a Rebecca C. Hinds. I believe her sister was Sarah Shannon. Rebecca's family lived in Minnesota, in either Brown County, McLoed or Wright County. At one time I had a census record showing their name. I have information on Rebecca's decendants. I welcome any correspondence.
Robert, There is a book in the Genealogical library in Decatur that I have been told about that emphasizes the Hanks. I don't have the title handy. Sarah (Sally) Hunter, daughter of James Hunter and Rachel Scott, married Joseph Hanks on July 28, 1836 in Sangamon County. They had 4 daughters, and one that I don't know anything about. They lived in Macon county near Lincoln Homestead. Dave H Nicea@aol.com
Posted on: Sangamon County, Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Sangamon/1992 Surname: Taylor ------------------------- I'm interested in knowing if anyone has information on Isaac Taylor b. 1830 and his children. Someone told me that he married in Wayne Co. IL to Margaret Halbert. This is where I'm confused. They said their son John E. Taylor married in Hamilton Co. IL to Sarah Catherine Acord. Does anyone have information on this? This John is MY John Taylor and I have been searching for years to find his family. However, on the 1880 Hamilton CO. IL census for John and his wife Sarah Catherine it's listed that John's parents were born in TENNESSEE. And when John married Sarah he married her in Hamilton CO. IL at her parents home and his mother gave her permission for the marriage to take place because John was underage. Sadly the name of his mother giving the permission for him to marry was not recorded by the Justice. Anything, anyone could share in regard to Isaac and his family would very much be appreciated. Thank you for your time. Regards, Theresa Kingsley

Greets to all from Virginia! I'm new to the list and am researching the LAYMAN family who lived in Springfield, IL but were originally from Warren County, Ohio. Can anyone tell me if there are directories for the city of Springfield in the years 1870 and after? If so, can SKS check out this name, Jesse Layman or his wife, Elizabeth Clendenin Layman? Are there any death/cemetery indices for Springfield? This is the scant information I have on Jesse Layman and his family. He was listed in the 1870 census for the city of Springfield, Sangamon County, taken on 3 August 1870 on page 282: Jessie LAYMAN, age 56, white, male, born Ohio (head of household) Occupation given as laborer. (year of birth about 1814) Elizabeth Layman, wife, age 48 white, female, born Ohio (year of birth 1822) Jennie Layman, daughter, age 21 white, female, born Ohio (year of birth about 1849) Robert Layman, son, age 17, white male, born Ohio (year of birth about 1853) Frank Layman, son, age 12, white male, born Ohio (year of birth about 1858) I dont know the location in the city of Springfield where the 1870 census was taken---for the categories, Dwelling house, numbered in order of visitation, 2118, and Families numbered in order of visitation, 2001. The Asst Marshall" appears to be Wm. P. Emery. Is there information on where/which part of the city of Springfield he conducted his enumeration in 1870? I believe the Laymans may have been in Sangamon County as early as 1856. Per 1867 estate of Samuel Clendinen in Warren County, Ohio"Elizabeth Layman, wife of Jesse Layman, residing in Springfield, IL was to receive a one-eighth portion of her fathers estate." Jesse Layman and Elizabeth CLENDENIN were married on 8 December 1847 in Warren County, Ohio. Elizabeth Clendenin Layman was born supposedly on 26 April 1822. The family was Presbyterian. Jesse/Elizabeth Layman were on the 1850 Miami County, Ohio census and sold land in Miami County, Ohio in 1856. Does anyone know this family? I would love to trade info. I have plenty on Elizabeth CLENDENIN Layman's family. Appreciatively, Mary Louise Townsend Potomac Falls, VA

You may want to check with IRAD for Sangamon County with an approximate date range. Most of the Illinois counties started recording death records by 1877. This particular IRAD is at the University of Illinois at Springfield, P.O. Box 19243, Springfield, IL 62794-9242. Phone 217-206-6520. I am searching for information on Mary E. NEVELES. The information that I have indicates that she was married to Jeremiah M. Smith in 1880 in Nodaway County, MO . She is listed as a native of Sangamon County, IL. She would have been born about 1857. Since the name Nevele(s) is somewhat unusual, any information regarding that name in the Springfield or surrounding area would be appreciated. Jack

Dave, I'm not sure yet. John Crowder was a member and trustee of this Springfield church, in April 1830, and in August 1830 he was one of the charter members of a new church, also called Springfield Church, in the village of Springfield. About seven years later, this church in Springfield went into the "mission system" and is now the Central Baptist church in downtown Springfield. The only Sangamon Association minutes for this period I have found are 1823 and 1828, and then May 1831 and later are intact. If I find anything I will be glad to share it. I'm trying now to find the deed again, to find the exact location.
