William Hamilton born in 1829 in Ireland moved to Sangaman about 1846.He married Sarah Russell also born in Ireland. They married in 1857 in Macopin Co.I am trying to place this family from this time to 1866.Sarah died after giving birth to 3 daughters. 1858 (Sarah Jane ),1860 Henrietta,1862 Margaret.Sarah died after these kids were born and William remarried in 1866 in Missouri.I have never been able to place them but the obit of William says his first wife died in sangamon and that he lived there untill her death. If anyone has a cemetery record of census from 1860 please check for this family. Williams father may of been John and his mother Jane Stafford Hamilton from Ireland.Thank you NJ

I am hoping to contact descendants of James A. Smith b. abt 1838 in Bloomington, McLean, Illinois m. Martha Drennan [b. 1842 in Chatham, Sangamon, Illinois] April 23, 1864 in Sangamon Co., Illinois. I have recently received some pension application papers from the step-mother of Martha and there are some affidavits from James and Martha. Glad to share my information. While transcribing the minutes of the Sangamon Association (1823-1839), I noticed that it was held in Springfield in the September 1833, and on Sunday the congregation was so large that part of the throng met at the courthouse, where two sermons were delivered, and part met at the Methodist church, where two sermons were delivered. It is evidently as I supposed at that time, the annual association was a community event which about everybody attended. The Methodists obviously had a very early church in Springfield which of course is not surprising. I am wondering if the "courthouse" at this point is a building which still exists? I thought I had heard that the Old State Capitol was at one time the courthouse, but it may have replaced an earlier one. I found a mention of this Spring Creek church again in 1839, which says that a meeting was to be held at a school house near Joshua Brown's on Spring Creek. Maybe some one knows who and where Joshua Brown was at that time, or what school was meant? Robert ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Posted on: Sangamon County, Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Sangamon/11994 Surname: SUTTON ------------------------- Hi, I would love any information on the Suttons. I descend from William Thomas Sutton- born August 7, 1832-33 in Springfield, Sangamon county Illinois to unknown parents. I do think I know who his parents were but I cannot prove it for sure. There was a David Sutton who married a Martha Hopkins in Sangamon Co. Il in I believe 1837. They were all living in Logan County IL in the census of 1850- William living with another family as a farm labor. Well, David and Martha had a daughter that was listed as age 15- she would have been born about 1835, so that would not make it impossible for them to have a child born in 1832-33 before they were married in 1837. William went on to marry Charity Cravens and had a son, David and a daughter Martha, along with others, respectively. I apologize if I am rattling on and I also apologize if I was talking in circles. Charla

Try the IL State Archives for a Death Certificate 1916 - 1947 or thereabouts. Try Lincoln Library, Sangamon Valley Collection, for an Obit...they have a Card Index File, don't need death date, if found. The Sangamon County Genealogical Society would like to thank the following people who helped in the Open House event conducted today: Jay Hunsley, Lori and Tom Little, Keith Norris and Judy Reeves. We had around thirty people both, familiar and new, faces show up at the society office. A good time was had by all, especially those who got to sample Lori's famous snickerdoodles! Thanks once again to all who participated in the even. Our next event will be the society's seventh annual White Elephant/Book Sale, Saturday 9 June 2001 from 9:00 A. M. to 3:00 P. M. at the society office 2856 South 11th Street, Springfield, Illinois. Everyone is invited to visit with fellow genealogy enthusiasts and purchase the many publications that will be available.
