Hello Marilyn, Glad you got it. The author of the story passed away two friday's ago from a massive heart attack. Shame because he brought a lot of interesting history on Sangamon County to lite each Friday in the local paper. He was only 52 or 54 and there is a grass roots effort to get the paper to publish a book of his works and sell it with the intent of sending the profits to a charity. I have family in an unkept cemetery out by Salisbury, Illinois (on the way to New Salem) from the early 1800's . I went out there a few months ago for the first time and most of the stones are either burried with years of debree or gone. I've been trying to find a girl scout or boy scout troop from the area that would like to clean it up but even with that help it would cost a few bucks to do. Fortunaly several cemetries in the area that were unkept have been cleaned and maintained in the last few years with the help of a scout troop. Nathaniel's story is written about on page 20. It reads: "FIRST COUNTY MURDER The first man held to trial for a capital offense was a blacksmith named Nathaniel Vannoy. On August 27, 1826 in a drunken rage, he killed his wife. During the next three days at a special session of the Circuit Court, Attorney General James Turney acted for the people and James Adams and J. H. Pugh for the defendant. Vannoy was found guilty by the jury and sentenced to hang on November 26th. Almost the entire community turned out for the handing as there was little else to cause such excitement. Following the execution, the surgeons to whom his body had been sold, began dissecting it on the spot. However, the crowd was so revolted with this action that they moved the body to a more pri! vate location."
