Is there any way to read the obits online published in the IL State Journal-Register. I went to their website but only the names are listed. Is there any way that I can read the entire obit? Thanks, Margarette Davis [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected])
I'm responding as a result of visiting the Chatam/Loami photo homepage and noticed Campbell. I was corresponding with a gentleman on this list a while back who was connected to your same Campbell line, but he and I could not our two together. I'll try again. So...here's the story. A Mary Jane Goings married a John Gilpin. in 1876. Mary Jane Goings (Gilpin) then married Charles X. Campbell in 1886 - Sangamon Co She then married John Jennings. Mary Jane may be listed in the 1880 census wife of OS Campbell - Pike Co, Hadley. In 1900 census when she is married to John Jennings, they are living next to Martha B. Miller. Sangamon Co Now....... through my grandmother I have inherited a big collection of old photos. One is of a farmhouse with people posing out in front. My grandmother (or possible my gr-grandmother) has identified with ink on this photo.... Pearl Campbell on horse (dau. of Mary Jane) Hired man beside the horse. Neighbor of Mary Jane Mary Jane Campbell - nee Goings, sister of John Wesley Goings At the top of this photo written in ink Springfield Illinois. Mary Jane's third husband Jennings must have died because after about 1900 she moved to San Antonio, Texas. I have a copy of her estate and the only Campbell mentioned is a Lee Roy Campbell. This Lee Roy may have been her descendant or he could have been a treasured son of the OS (OX) Campbell husband. I've suspected he had a previous family before marrying MJ. If anyone can put all this together, I'd appreciate it. I can scan a the pic and send it. Someone may be able to recognize the house it's very distinctive in appearance...possibly it still stands . Shain. (Thomas was one of the first settlers in Harrison County, Missouri). I don't have much on Emanuel Jones (except that his brother's were James and John ~this information was found in a big red book "Family Records of Philip Hupp and Mary Buzzard..............Thomas Shain and Cythia Bridges....." by W. Flora Shepherd) This book also said that Emanuel was born in Fleming, KY, went to Sangamon City, Illinios with his eldest brother James in 1831, and at 55 yars of age, married Emeline Shain, April 20, 1848. I was wondering if you could answer a question for me... Do you know anything about John Shain? Mostly about his parents. I was told (in the above book) that John , b. abt 1780 near the mouth of Kanawah River, (married Mary Turpin b. 1786) d. 4 Sept 1846 in Kentucky. Mary moved to Harrison County Missouri after John's death. (Most, if not all, of the children of John and Mary moved to Harrison County, Missouri). Do you know when the Shains moved to Sangamon County? Thanks! Stacy

My father was born in 1918, and he used to speak of playing near the seminary when he was a little kid. On that basis, I think it was located in the north end of Springfield. I believe it was still operating in the late 1960s or early 1970s. I know this information is sketchy, bu hope it helps.

The list of children of James Vance and Barbara Miller I obtained from two Vance researchers. They had the list of children but they do not remember where or when they got it. They are both from the Labette Co., KS area. This list gives the names of some of the children who had left the Vance home before the 1850 census and some of the names hadn't been seen until we put them online. I believe that this list came from a family Bible and is valid. I have since researched the "mystery" children and have been able to trace most of their families for 2-3 generations. The only ones I haven't been able to identify is William and his sister Nancy who were in the 1850 census with their parents James & Barbara. Michael b. Sep 1821 d. 1900 Sang. Surnames: Miller, Hanon, Sharp, Bishop, Badger, Huffman, Hayward, Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xg.2ADI/2571 Message Board Post: Miller, Hanon Sharp and allied families from Christian and Sangamon Counties. Here is what I know about these families, Samuel Miller moved from his native State Virginia, to Kentucky, where he grew to manhood in Christian County Kentucky. In 1822, he moved to Illinois and settled in South Fork Township. He married Hannah Hanon (Hainen), born 1799 in South Carolina, she died in 1866. Samuel died October 1833. They were the parents of the following children: Sallie, Melinda, Isaac, Daniel, Martin, Levi, Elijah, Jane, Eli, Charles, and two who died in infancy. The widow of Samuel Miller, instituted a suit against Jesse Hanon, Sr., to compel a more faithful administration of his trust. ELIJAH A. MILLER married Miss Jane S. Bishop, who was born in Rochester, N. Y., August 6, 1830. Six children were born to our them. Ada, whose birth occurred in April, 1855, is the wife of H. J. Huffman, who is a school teacher in Seward County, Neb.; Henry died November 30, 1866; Annie died in infancy; Jennie, born October 22, 1862, became the wife of O. E. Badger, a Methodist minister; Fannie, wife of A. J. Hayward, a farmer of Taylorville Township, was born July 6, 1864; and Alice, the youngest of the family, born July 8, 1866, died September 19, 1869. Daniel Miller was a man familiarly known to the early settlers, and was well remembered by many of the citizens of the county. He was born in Kentucky, in 1818, and at the age of five years came with his father's family to this county. Daniel died November 09, 1848. In the case of Shumway, adm'r of Daniel Miller, deceased vs. John Cheney, Lincoln and Vandeveer appeared for the plaintiff. and Judge Robbins of Springfield for the defendant. The wife of Martin Hanon, whose maiden name was Sarah Miller, (there are two different versions) was born in Pennsylvania, her people being of German birth. Her parents came to America after their marriage, settling in Pennsylvania, where the father died in middle life. To Mr. and Mrs. Hanon were born ten children, only four of the number now living 1893: Jesse; Joseph; Susan, wife of G. R. Sharp, of Sharpsburg, Ill.; and Elijah, who is a resident of Learned, Kan. Joseph lives at Willow Springs, Mo. The parents were members of the Predestinarian Baptist Church. This Sarah Miller may have been related to Samuel Miller. Martin Hanon, was married in Kentucky to Sarah Miller, who died in 1861. Martin Hanon went down into Egypt [Kentucky], and was married in Shawneetown on the 10th of October, 1823 to Miss Sallie Miller, was Sallie, a nickname for Sarah?. There is a good chance descendants still live in Christian or Sangamon Counties. The Iodence line came from Jane Miller.
