Hi Molly I was in Springfield Ill. a couiple years ago looking for marriage and land records. The marriage record did not give the bride and grooms parents names. Is there another record that gives parents names? HI Paul - Marriage records in IL prior to 1878 do not (as a norm) have parental information (unless one of the bridal party was under-aged, and the parental/guardian permission slip survived long enough to be microfilmed). After 1878 - the bridal couple were to complete a marriage Application - and in most IL counties (except Cook... they seem to have their own rules) - this application (or its equivelant, the marriage Return) still survive. Marriage applications/returns give parental info. For marriages prior to 1878 - - - family & parental info may be gleaned from Census findings (state, Federal) - or newspaper articles/mentions of the marriage (i.e., "took place in the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. (whoever), on (address) Street." Other parental/family info is often obtained from family members' death certificates (especially after 1916) - or obituaries (usually more "newsy" after 1870). Hope this helps? Let me know if I can be of any assistance, ok? molly Molly Kennedy P O Box 5785 Springfield, IL 62705 www.mollx.com Genealogy - Confusing the dead, and annoying the living. >From: "wiseowl" <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [ILSANGAM-L] FERN E. Hi Marion - (and all) I live in Springfield, and do quite a bit of local & statewide research. Yesterday (Mon) I needed to do some lookups at the Univ of IL Springfield-campus IRAD (Regional Archives Depository) - - and while awaiting their grad-student intern to finish copying an 1851 probate case file for me, I looked through their original book of Sangamon Co Marriage Index (Brides) - Your Fern E. Martin and Arthur F. Aber married in Sangamon County on July 17, 1912 In this original Bride's index - this marriage item gave both the marriage date AND that the license/record would be located in vol 9, pg 409. However - if one looked at the Marriage Index Books housed at the Sangamon Co Clerk's office, the marriage date would not be listed in those books... only a cert #; no date. They combined both their Brides and Grooms index books many years ago (that's why the UIS IRAD was able to obtain the original Brides book). Sangamon Co Clerk's office charges $12 for marriage license/return (certified only). Let me know if I could be of any assistance, ok? molly Molly Kennedy P O Box 5785 Springfield, IL 62705 www.mollx.com Genealogy - Confusing the dead, and annoying the living. >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: [ILSANGAM-L] FERN E. Have you tried IRAD, the official IL records site? I can never remember their long URL, but do a search on IRAD and it'll pop right up. You can search on other vital records at that site too. And even order copies. I believe the address for the Lincoln residence is 8th & Edwards, if that helps any.
I'm not a Lincoln scholar but have read a bit about his career because it tangentially touches that of one of my ancestors in Sangamon Co. I read a book called "Lincoln's Friends" which gave the address of the family when Lincoln was in the state legislature, as well as at other times. I don't remember if that was in 1854. That book talked about his children, but I don't remember it mentioning where they went to school--that wasn't what I was reading it for. But the family's address might help you. Sorry I don't remember the author, but it is recent, and you could find it Amazon. You can search contents of some books on Amazon, and perhaps this is one of them, since it was widely reviewed when it came out within the last couple of years. Of course if someone on the list can tell you what you need to know, that's more direct! Hope this is of some help, Doris Waggoner Seattle -- "jan" <[email protected]> wrote: What school did Robert Lincoln, Abe Lincoln`s son, attend in LSpringfield, Ill and where was it located in 1854? ==== ILSANGAM Mailing List ==== To post a message send to: [email protected] You must be a subscriber to the list or the digest
As a child in Springfield, Robert attended an cademy operated by a man named Abel W. Estabrook (not Esterbrook; the correct spelling was noted by Dr. Wayne C. Temple on p. 42 of the Spring, 2000, edition of the Lincoln Herald). In 1853, Robert enrolled in the Illinois State University (in Springfield) which was a preparatory school with our instructors. Apparently the studies weren't difficult. In Robert's own words, "We did just what pleased us, study consuming only a very small portion of our time." In 1859 Robert applied to Harvard, but he failed its entrance examinations. It was apparent his education in Springfield was quite deficient.

If you change the spelling to PODESCHI - you'll find several still alive in Taylorville, and who have telephone listings -- - OR - you could contact St. Mary's Church in Taylorville, and ask for a recent copy of their parishioner's booklet. molly Molly Kennedy P O Box 5785 Springfield, IL 62705 www.mollx.com Genealogy - Confusing the dead, and annoying the living. >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: [ILSANGAM-L] Podeski in Taylorville >Date: 4 Dec 2004 15:44:11 -0700 > >This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > >Classification: Query > >Message Board URL: > >http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/xg.2ADI/2587 > >Message Board Post: > >I am trying to locate any Podeskis, descendants of Bernardine Gottsacker >Podeski and Paul Podeski (some spellings are 'Podeshi'). As part of a project on the "Long Nine", I would like to get copies of any obituaries that might have appeared in Springfield papers for these men and their wives. Because of their significance to the community, I believe that most would have appeared there, even if they died elsewhere. I have approximate dates of death for most, but can't travel to Springfield for the foreseeable future. If you are willing to look up obituaries in newspaper microfilms at any of the local libraries, please contact me off-list so that we can discuss expenses, etc. For those who don't know, the "Long Nine" were a group of legislators from Sangamon County that included Senators Archer G. Herndon and Job Fletcher and Representatives Abraham Lincoln, Ninian Wirt Edwards, John Dawson, Andrew McCormick, Dan Stone, William F. Elkin, and Robert L. Wilson. The name "The Long Nine" comes from the fact that these men averaged six feet in height and weighed over 200 pounds. Their efforts in the 1836-1838 legislative session were successful in moving the State capital from Vandalia to Springfield. Wilson DeCamp Vienna, VA
