Many Southern Illinoisians went to either Michigan or Chicago for work. Harrisburg itself is not a very pretty town, but south Saline and Pope Co. are beautiful. In my mind, Harrisburg used to be BEAUTIFUL! I was born there...57 years ago. It was heaven, of course...I was little then and surrounded by the ones I loved. Spent last week end there...the town sure does need something...some kind of industry or something. I wish they would have been able to preserve the integrity of the buildings. Some of the old ones still stand, but some have been torn down for more modern structures. The most stark example of generations colliding was the wonderful old Pruitt building on the square...can't tell you anything about the soundness of the structure, but it had huge signs painted in red letters offering "Discount furniture"....looked sooooo pitiful. I know these things happen to small towns, I just wish it hadn't happened to mine. OK...I guess I could have stayed around, gotten involved, tried to help out...but my family moved away when I was in the 7th grade. Now I'm not sure what it would take. We made our traditional trip to the cemetery...Sunset Lawn. The mausoleum is in dreadful shape. I would be just sick if I was one of the families with loved ones resting there.
