Question regarding race on census pre 1900. IF the father was white & mother Indian how would they have listed the children ????? WOULD this be different if the Father was Indian and the mother white ??? WOULD they have listed the Father if he was Indian pre 1840 ?? Mixed ?? Thanks steve [email protected]
Steve, They could be listed any which way, depending on the enumerator and what the head of the household told them. I've found one man, who his descendants claim was one-half white, one-quarter African and one-quarter Cherokee listed as white, as is his wife, in the 1830 census, then black for 40, 50 and maybe 60, then after he dies, his wife, who was listed as either black or mulatto during the censuses he was alive, switches back to white.
