Taken from the Daily Register, Thur., Sept. 30, 1948 "...President Truman's tour through Harrisburg was a part of a one-day trip through southern Illinois and into Kentucky, where he will give his main speech of the day at Louisville tonight." "...The President left his special train at 7:35 a.m. at Mt. Vernon and went through Benton, West Frankfort, Herrin, and on to Carbondale, where he gave his principal speech in southern Illinois. From Carbondale Mr. Truman's party sped on to Carterville, Marion, and into Harrisburg." "...Without hesitating, the long parade of police, buses, and accompanying cars sped on through Harrisburg and on to Eldorado, where Mr. Truman spoke briefly." "...Poplar street was crowded with multitudes of persons for its entire length. It ws reported that cars were lined along Route 13 all the way from Marion and on to Eldorado on Route 45."
