Obituary Mrs. Indya P. Wade Indya P. Wade, daughter of Dr. John and Mary Ellis Parmley was born at Rock, Illinois on December 8, 1882 and passed away on January 2, 1952. Her death came while teaching an English class in the Harrisburg Township High School, thus ending a career of 32 years of teaching in the public schools of Southern Illinois. She received her early education in Pope county, attending school at Creal Springs and later Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois. She entered the teaching profession at the age of 16. At an early age she was converted and became a member of the Baptist church. In 1903 she was married to Lacey L. Wade of Golconda and to this union, three children were born: Ralph, Mary and Virginia. In 1923, Mrs. Wade again entered the teaching profession and in addition, continued her own education attaining her Bachelor of Education degree at Southern Illinois University in 1928. She attended the University of Illinois during summer vacations and received her Master of Arts degree in 1938 from the institution. While attending the University of Illinois, membership in the Alpha Chapter of the honor society Kappa Delta Pi was conferred upon her for her high scholastic standing. She has had several articles published in Illinois educational publications. >From 1928 to 1948, she taught English in the Golconda Community High School and from 1948 until she passed away, she held a similar position in the Harrisburg Township High School. It was typical that the end came in the classroom where she devoted so many years of her life not only to teaching of English, but to building strong character traits in her students and inspiring them to lead useful lives. Her selfless, conscientious devotion to her duties endeared her to the hearts of all of her pupils. Former students of hers are now engaged in practically all of the known professions and other fields of endeavor, not only in Southern Illinois but in many other states, thus the extent of her influence for good is immeasurable. Many of these pupils remembered her on her birthday and at other times and often visited her when they returned to Golconda. Her sparkling sense of humor was one of the many outstanding traits of her vibrant personality. In the class room, her academic standards were high and her students were taught to strive for more than mediocrity. It has been said that her students, when later attending institutions of higher learning, have been identified by their instructors as having studied under Mrs. Wade due to their excellent foundations in English. In the words of the Apostle Paul, she truly could say, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith….." She is survived by her children: Ralph P. Wade of Waukegan, Illinois, Mrs. Harry G. Maynor of Buffalo, New York and Mrs. Harry W. Wilson, Jr. of Richland, Washington; two sisters: Mrs. Milo Austin of Herrin, Illinois. And Mrs. John Maynor, Eddyville, Ill.; two grandchildren: Harry D. Maynor and Harry Wade Wilson; a niece, Mrs. Truman C. Baker of Chicago, Illinois, a nephew, John Parmley of Golconda, and other more distant relatives.
