Deb: I did find my Lebanon Cemetery Book and there is a Rufus M. Smith buried there. He was born 20 Apr 1850 and died 3 Feb, 1922. His wife is listed as Malissa J. Adams b: 12 Oct 1847 and died 8 May 1895. They were married on 17 Sept. 1871 in Saline Co., IL. The wife you have as Sarah is a second wife. There are two children buried with them: W. L. Smith son of R.M. & M. J. b: 10 June 1872 d: 31 Oct 1873 and B. H. Smith, infant of R.M. and & M. J. b: 3 Aug 1882 d: 31 Jan 1883. I also found your Rufus on the 1900 & 1910 Census in Galatia Twp, Galatia, IL. as follows: 1900 Smith, Rufus age 50 b: Apr 1850 married 5 yr. Sarah 47 Aug 1852 1 child 1 living Cora 16 Nov 1883 Adams, Henry 23 Servant 1910 Smith, Rufus M. age 59 married 15yr. b: IL. Father b: Tn. Mother b: Ky. Sarah A. 56 Tn. 2 children born 1 living. Neely, Earnest 8 Nephew IL. Looks like he married Sarah the same year that Malissa died. Apparently another child was born and died between 1900 and 1910. Cora could not have been the daughter of Sarah as Sarah and Rufus did not marry until 1895 unless of course she Cora could have taken the smith name. Hope this helps, Jane (Tate) Dyer ----- Original Message ----- From: "Deb Snook" <rockwood_4@juno.com> To: <ILSALINE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 24, 2006 9:19 AM Subject: [ILSALINE-L] Death or obit index for Saline Co. Jane, I am trying to figure out who Rufus is married to. In the 1910 census his wife is listed as Sarah, and they have a nephew living with them, Ernest Neely. I am suspecting that Sarah is either a NEELY or possibly a WILLIAMS. Ernest Neely is listed as a nephew, and I an assuming that he is a nephew to Sarah. Ernest Neely is the son of Benjamin Neely and Susan Elizabeth Williams Neely. Thank you for your information, this is all new information. I appreciate your response. Deb: I don't have the death or obit but thought I might mention what I do know about Rufus Smith. You may already have all of this. His father was John B. Smith b: Tn. and wife Virginia b: Ky. Their children were Lafayette, Rufus M., and Eliza E. Lafayette Smith b: 1845 is the father of John B. Smith b: 1867(named for his grandfather). This John B. Smith married Lucinda Eldine Williams, sister to my Grandmother. Most of these Smiths are buried in the Lebanon Cemetery just north of Galatia. I have that cemetery book but am unable to lay my hands on it right now. Maybe someone else will have it and check to see if Rufus is buried there. I will get back with you if I find it. Hello, Could anyone tell me if there is either a death index or an obituary index for Saline County? I am trying to find death dates for Rufus Smith b.Apr 1850 IL and his wife Sarah Smith b. Aug 1852 Tenn They have a daughter Cora Smith b. Nov 1883 IL Can anyone assist me? Thank you, Debbie
Hello fellow listers, Does anyone know anything about the Rufus M. SMITH b. abt 1851 IL, and his wife Sarah b. abt 1854? This was the 2nd marriage for both of them according to the 1910 census records, and they are listed as living in Galatia Twp, Galatia Village. I highly suspect that this Sarah was originally a NEELY/NEELEY. Living with this couple in 1910 is a nephew Ernest Neely, he is my Great Uncle. I am not having any luck finding this couple in the IL marriage index, as per the census they were married about 1895. Does anyone have some ideas for me to try and track this couple down a little more? Thank you for any assistance. Debbie

I'm researching a David L. Thompson who married a Tabitha/Labitha Simons in Saline Co in 1886. By 1900 Bitha, aged 39, is shown as a widow with 4 children & living in Clay Co., AR, however, her children are not living with her. Because of the lack of the 1890 census, I'm unable to determine the 4 children's names, David's age, etc. He could be the son of George & Jane Thompson who lived in Williamson Co in the 1880 census as they had a son named David L. aged 19 which would fit in comparison with Labitha's age. Can someone help?? Glenda. Labitha married my widowed, gr-gr-grandfather in 1901 and I'm trying to find her children. I know at least one daughter was alive in 1926 when he died as she went back to Marion, Williamson Co., IL to live with her daughter. Does an
Hi, I found Albert in the 1900 census with wife Maude (born in Pennsylvania) and there was one son Guy ..........Now, My Maude was married befre and I know to a Potter and, she had a son Guy............Her first husband died ...in the Illinois marriage records it shows their marriage for I believe 1898.......... The above is the couple I am in search of...................... Again in 1898 Maude Potter married Albert Waltz....and then in the 1900 census it shows them and her being from Pennsylvania. I believe it was Cook County, Illinois.
