Kate, I had the exact same problem. I love my old Sierra program--nothing out there now is as good. Here is how we solved my problem. We tricked Sierra to think that it was operating on my old operating system (Windows 95). It took us a couple of days to figure out how to do that. Sorry, but it has been a few years and I can't remember all we had to do. But I do remember the one key item: XP allows you to set up multiple users. Do NOT, repeat--do NOT set up multiple users. By sitting up multiple users, many of the older software program will not run properly--they simply get confused when they encounter that in the XP environment. If you have already installed it with multi users--uninstall it. Then reinstall with a single user. Before you start messing about, make certain you have several good copies of your data base down loaded (successfully). Do that in "ged com" format. There should be sites on the web that can lead you thru that. Since virtually all the family software uses "ged com" formats, should you have to purchase a new family software program, uploading that data base to a new program would be fairly easy. Take a patience pill before you start and good luck. Jo Ann Avery Henderson Higdon formerly of Johnston City Bermuda Dunes, CA
Highlite the text by passing your cursor over it and use the edit/copy feature in Windows XP. Then paste the text into you new program. It may be slow doing this, but will be much faster than retyping.
Kate, I would try going to www.microsoft.com, then select Windows XP, and there will probably be a selection for technical support or contact us, which could help you. They should know how to solve your problem. Good Luck -- JoAnn
Hello All- I don't want to tie up the list with a big discussion about this software vs. that software, but I would like to know if anyone has tried to convert from an older software to a new program with success. I have a 10 year old version of Sierra Generations that is no longer compatible with Windows XP - I can still view my data, but cannot print anything. I'm a little panicked because I have over 4,000 entries and 10 years worth of research in this program. I DO NOT want to re-enter all of this data. Any suggestions? Thanks- Kate (Taylor) Rodenbach
Norm, the library in Harrisburg is very helpful and past mayors sounds like the kind of information they would have. Betty FL On the WW I Draft Cards there was a Pat Shea who lived in Dorrisville b: 17 Apr 1891. At that time this Pat Shea was a coal miner. He was married.
