Sue Sue, I am not a MANDRELL descendant and have not really done any MANDRELL research. My info comes from Saline census records and a posting on the Sumner County TNGenWeb page. It is under Family Album Biographies and titled, "Descendants of Solomon Mandrell 1730-1833". According to this post, the children of Jesse TUTTLE and Martha MANDRELL are Frances, Lucy, Rodman, Elizabeth, Benjamin, James Alfred, Martha, Jesse, Hubard, and William. Your Clarissa might be the daughter of the younger Jesse TUTTLE, brother of James Alfred. The parents of Martha MANDRELL are given as Solomon MANDRELL and Sarah MNU. You might want to check out the Sumner website for more MANDRELL info. Also, I would suggest you search the TNSUMNER mailing list. I recall a recent discussion of the MANDRELL line which took place there. -Robyn
Robyn, I actually went to the Harrisburg County Clerk's Office and they let me photocopy the actual book record (my family had a marriage and some births then too). I am sure if you called them they would/could do that for a small fee (I think I paid them a couple dollars each record). If I recall on mine there is a statement the father signs allowing the marriage (for the under age). I hope that helps! Heather Armstrong (Kane, Pearce, Oglesby, Mings, Welch, Carnahan, .... Who were the parents of Eliza/Louisa FLEMING? In a biography for Isaac Robert TUTTLE in "The History of Southern Illinois", Eliza's father is listed as Beverly FLEMING of TN. Any help or additional information on the FLEMING family would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Robyn Collins
Does anyone know who the parents of John Curry Watson are? He was born about 1824 in Tennessee and married Sarah Hall. I believe he died sometime in the 1860's in Saline Co. I am curious to know if he was related to Robert and Margaret Watson that lived in the Galatia area??? Thanks for your help and/or any suggestions. Mary Ann <cematapey@aol.com>

Alexander Nelson Hathaway Obituary Alexander Nelson Hathaway was born in Pope County, Ill., Oct 18, 1833. He was married to Emily J. Jennings [note: dau of Elijah & Mary Jane Soward Jennings] Nov 25, 1866. To this union were born three children, viz: Mrs. Sarah Aud, of Hartsville, Mrs. Ellen Wasson, of Oak and Mrs. Julia Gee, of Harrisburg. Mr. & Mrs. Hathaway took into their family Jacob Shelby, an orphan, at the age of two years and reared to manhood. He is married and lives at Harrisburg. Uncle Nelse, as he was known, had four brothers, John, William, Spencer and Gordon, three of them, William, Gordon and Spencer with himself were union soldiers, Gordon and Spencer lost their lives while in the army. His brothers are all dead. He has one living sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Partain, of Herod Springs and one sister dead, Mrs. Nelson Conley. He professed a hope in Christ and united with the Regular Baptist Church at Old Grandpier in November 1880. He was a firm believer in salvation by the grace of God and frequently talked in church meetings. He died March 14, 1917, aged 83 years, 4months and 26 days. He was buried in Old Grandpier cemetery the 15th inst. A large number of his friends turned out to pay their respects to their departed friend and neighbor. He leaves a companion, three children, one sister and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his departure. The companion has lost an affectionate husband, the children a kind father, the church a true Christian and the community a good citizen, but we are sure that our loss is his gain. I just learned that the start date for the flatboat trip has been delayed, due to the heavy rains this week making it impossible to get the 9-ton boat out of the lake to move it. I'll post the new schedule on our website when I receive it. Sorry. Robert
"JOURNEY OF REMEMBRANCE" This summer and fall, Mr. Ronald Drake, an attorney from Washington DC, has had a flatboat built on the old home place of the Jeremiah Thompson family (which he owns), in Indiana. He has worked hard to plan a "Journey of Remembrance" in honor of the flatboat trip his ancestors, the Thompsons, made in December 1810, from the Little Miami river, near Cincinnati, continuing down the Ohio river, now the southern border of Indiana and Illinois, to the confluence with the Mississippi river, and then by keelboat and wagon to Cape Girardeau, Mo. The flatboat is now being taken to the site near Cincinnati, where the two-to-three-week journey will begin on Thanksgiving Day. This has been done at Mr. Drake's own expense, with no fundraisers, contributions, etc. Even though it is to honor his ancestors who were Primitive Baptists (Daniel Boone signed as a witness on the marriage certificate of Jeremiah Thompson's grandparents), Mr. Drake has made it very clear that this journey is not in any way to proselyte or push his religion. Various people who are interested will be aboard for parts of the trip, including a Catholic nun (a group of nuns made a similar flatboat trip and kindly shared their experiences). Flatboats were used by hundreds, perhaps thousands, of early pioneer travelers, on this same route, in the early years of the 19th century. Ron Drake, a former legislator in Indiana, chose this means of honoring his ancestors' courage and bravery, one of whom (Wilson Thompson) left an autobiography which described their journey in 1810. Many people usually gather at docking points, but since this will be in late November and December there may not be as many. I have a copy of the tentative schedule where the flatboat will dock at the end of each travel day. I hope to be on board between Old Shawneetown, Illinois, and Elizabethtown, Illinois, on December 4th. John O'Dell, of Harrisburg, and myself, with perhaps a dozen others, met in Indiana to learn more about the trip earlier this week. Other people will be involved in letting the public know about it, but I thought I would let a few of the genweb forums know about it. More about the trip, and photos of the flatboat, can be seen by going to our website below, and clicking on the link at the top of the page: http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/pbl.html Sincerely, Robert Webb
