    1. [ILSALINE] [Fwd: [BRADEN] Need help with John Braden and Polly Gholson puzzle]
    2. pearlbeard
    3. I descend from the probable brothers James and John Braden from Saline and HCI areas in the 1820' /1830's. It is believed their children married making both of these my 3Ggrandfathers. Through online records at Ancestry.com and correlating facts from online relatives, it was established that after John Braden Sr. divorced his first wife Minerva Hogg (still haven't found the application that others have claimed, but hopeful) he married Mary (Polly) Dinsmore Gholson, widow of John Gholson, in HCI in 1828. They (Mary Polly and John Braden) are in HCI in the 1830 census with one female of five and under ten. Polly's dau was born abt. 1826 making her four in 1830 depending on birth and census month. In 1840 they are in McLeansboro HCI with one son 10 to 15 (John Jr. would have been 17 as he was b. 1823) and one dau. 10/15 (Polly would have been 14). In 1850 John and Mary along with their 'daughter' Polly and William Sweeten are living side by side in Bradshaw Twnshp in Green Co. (later to become Clay Co.) Arkansas. To confuse matters Polly and William have a daughter named Minerva. They are there in the same area in 1860, and in 1870 John and Mary are Not there. Haven't found Mary anywhere else yet and it is likely that John has died. In 1880 Polly is also living alone with two children so possible that William is also dead. Now comes the confusion: After connecting with a cousin online we discovered a set of coincidental records that leads one to believe that John and Mary Polly Gholson's daughter could also have been the Elizabeth Gholson who married Wm Margrave in 1843! Elizabeth as well as Mary Polly Jr. was born ca. 1826 IL. The census of 1850, 1860 find them living in different places in IL but in 1870 back in HCI, we find Elizabeth Margraves and Mary Braden are living together next door to John Margraves (Elizabeth and Wm.s son). We need help to find out which is the real daughter of John and Mary Polly Gholson. Both Polly Sweeten and Elizabeth Margrave had sons named John. They were all in the same area before 1850. Their is only one young female in the 1830 and 1840 census, so if there were two daughters, where is the other one? Family legend tells that John Sr. boarded his son John Jr. with another family when he separated and divorced from Minerva so that would explain why there are no young males in the 1830 and John Jr. shows up in the 1840. Is it possible that John and Minerva had two children? Although Mary Polly named her first born Minerva, she is listed as Mary G and Polly G on different census. Could the G be for Gholson even though she was married as Polly Braden? If Elizabeth Gholson is not John and Mary Polly's, whose daughter is she? 3. List: I have just had the greatest experience with a Library in Kenosha, WI. For the past two weeks I have been requesting and receiving Obituaries through the mail and by e-mail simply by asking and giving a name and death date. At first they did not ask to be reimbursed for the cost but after receiving several copies in the mail, I inquired about the cost. They ask me to send 39 cents for postage and 15 cents for copying.!!! I sent them a check to cover more than that because of their great service. Wish all libraries were that cooperative!! Jane

    1. [ILSALINE] Obituary ~ Mrs. Indya Parmley Wade
    2. Obituary Mrs. Indya P. Wade Indya P. Wade, daughter of Dr. John and Mary Ellis Parmley was born at Rock, Illinois on December 8, 1882 and passed away on January 2, 1952. Her death came while teaching an English class in the Harrisburg Township High School, thus ending a career of 32 years of teaching in the public schools of Southern Illinois. She received her early education in Pope county, attending school at Creal Springs and later Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois. She entered the teaching profession at the age of 16. At an early age she was converted and became a member of the Baptist church. In 1903 she was married to Lacey L. Wade of Golconda and to this union, three children were born: Ralph, Mary and Virginia. In 1923, Mrs. Wade again entered the teaching profession and in addition, continued her own education attaining her Bachelor of Education degree at Southern Illinois University in 1928. She attended the University of Illinois during summer vacations and received her Master of Arts degree in 1938 from the institution. While attending the University of Illinois, membership in the Alpha Chapter of the honor society Kappa Delta Pi was conferred upon her for her high scholastic standing. She has had several articles published in Illinois educational publications. >From 1928 to 1948, she taught English in the Golconda Community High School and from 1948 until she passed away, she held a similar position in the Harrisburg Township High School. It was typical that the end came in the classroom where she devoted so many years of her life not only to teaching of English, but to building strong character traits in her students and inspiring them to lead useful lives. Her selfless, conscientious devotion to her duties endeared her to the hearts of all of her pupils. Former students of hers are now engaged in practically all of the known professions and other fields of endeavor, not only in Southern Illinois but in many other states, thus the extent of her influence for good is immeasurable. Many of these pupils remembered her on her birthday and at other times and often visited her when they returned to Golconda. Her sparkling sense of humor was one of the many outstanding traits of her vibrant personality. In the class room, her academic standards were high and her students were taught to strive for more than mediocrity. It has been said that her students, when later attending institutions of higher learning, have been identified by their instructors as having studied under Mrs. Wade due to their excellent foundations in English. In the words of the Apostle Paul, she truly could say, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith….." She is survived by her children: Ralph P. Wade of Waukegan, Illinois, Mrs. Harry G. Maynor of Buffalo, New York and Mrs. Harry W. Wilson, Jr. of Richland, Washington; two sisters: Mrs. Milo Austin of Herrin, Illinois. And Mrs. John Maynor, Eddyville, Ill.; two grandchildren: Harry D. Maynor and Harry Wade Wilson; a niece, Mrs. Truman C. Baker of Chicago, Illinois, a nephew, John Parmley of Golconda, and other more distant relatives. Card of Thanks We wish to thank our friends for the kindness shown us in our recent bereavement - the minister, the organist, the choir and soloist, the flower girls, the pallbearers, all those who sent beautiful flowers and those who sent food and assisted us in so many ways. 3. Robyn, I have wondered myself if the "Bela" Flemming in the 1860 census of Saline was not Beverly Fleming. I think there is a good possibility that he was the same person and the father of Eliza/Louisa. One of my ancestors was Mary FLEMING who married William R. CRAIG on 11 Oct 1850 in Williamson Co. IL. Mary lived to the ripe old age of 94 - long enough for me to be able to get a death certificate for her. Information supplied by her son, Sam Craig, lists her father as Beverly "FLEMENS" of TN, mother's maiden name ROBINSON of SC, date of Mary's birth 15 Aug 1832 in IL. Her obituary gives Franklin Co. IL as place of birth. Beverly FLEMING is found in 1830 and 1840 census of Franklin Co. IL, but I was never able to find him in any census records for 1850. Do you know when Eliza died? perhaps a death record or obituary would help you. Donna
