My great aunt was a Karnes - her father was Robert Jefferson Karnes born 1857 and married to Amanda Lowe. Robert Jefferson Karnes parents were - George W. Karnes and Mary Ann Gasaway. This family was in the Raleigh area but would not be surprised if they were related to the Karnes in Galatia. My father's family has been in Saline Co. since the 1820's and I have done much research on them and in the area. The libraries in Eldorado and Harrisburg have always been helpful. I love the Genealogy Societies library and it is opened most mornings and it is EXCELLENT. The people at the courthouse have always been helpful too. When I go to southern Illinois I always go to the Genealogy Society in the morning and then to the other places in the afternoon. My maternal ancestors are from the same Saline County area as the Karnes families. As someone has written, there are Karnes headstones in the Webber Campground and Old Bethel cemeteries. Some 30 years ago or more, my aunt would report news about some Karnes to my mother, but they were not relatives. I will insert an article which appeared in the Harrisburg Daily Register: ****** Charles K. Burnett started two newspapers in Raleigh, the Raleigh Flag and the Raleigh Egyptian. He was about 21 years old when he started the Flag. He was born in 1835 in what would become Saline County and married Julia A. Karnes, likely a member of the Karnes Family which settled near Raleigh in territorial days. Daily Register On line Archives First county newspaper unfurls as Raleigh Flag By JON MUSGRAVE Staff Writer HARRISBURG, Ill. (Sept. 22, 1997) ******* The Harrisburg Public Library has a good genealogical section. The Saline County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 4, Harrisburg, IL 62946-0004, has a great deal of material but they are open on a limited basis and as far as I know do not have a phone number. Both places are very helpful. There are cemetery books, census records, etc. The county clerk's office has birth, marriage, death, probate, and land records and they are helpful, too. I have a few pages of the 1850 Federal Census of Saline County, Illinois as transcribed and indexed by the Tri-City Genealogical Society, Richland, Kennewick, Pasco, Washington. Hi! I am descendant from the Kane's, Armstrong's, Berry's, Mings', Carnahan's, Welch's, Pearce's.....there might be more....but from that area. In 2001 I took a road trip from Ca (Lake Tahoe, where we now live) and had a ball finding all the ghosts.... Karnes Rd does relate to your family - I believe it has to do with the old farms. Our family is tied to the old Kane Farm in Long Branch, where the Kanes/Mings/etc built Long Branch Baptist Church and a school (in 1861-ish)....in the old church records we found for Cottage Grove (and graveyards), Galatia, etc.....we saw many many Karnes listed. Also in the bigger, new cemetery in Harrisburg itself. My ggfather was a Baptist minister and atty (W. C. Kane) and he is mentioned with a Karnes quite often. This probably doesn't help much....but if you can get to the Geneological Library in Harrisburg, there you will find lots of info about the older families in that area. Galatia is such a small spot that Harrisburg keeps most of that, or so we found for our family. Now, to find where the Armstrongs from Omaha went/came from/etc!!! :) Good Luck and Cheers for you to pull together a family reunion....I have been trying to do that for 10 years!!! Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former sailors and soldiers. On May 5, 1868, Logan declared in General Order No. 11 that: The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit. During the first celebration of Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery. This 1868 celebration was inspired by local observances of the day in several towns throughout America that had taken place in the three years since the Civil War. In fact, several Northern and Southern cities claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, including Columbus, Miss.; Macon, Ga.; Richmond, Va.; Boalsburg, Pa.; and Carbondale, Ill. In 1966, the federal government, under the direction of President Lyndon Johnson, declared Waterloo, N.Y., the official birthplace of Memorial Day. They chose Waterloo—which had first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—because the town had made Memorial Day an annual, community-wide event during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags. By the late 1800s, many communities across the country had begun to celebrate Memorial Day and, after World War I, observances also began to honor those who had died in all of America's wars. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May. (Veterans Day, a day set aside to honor all veterans, living and dead, is celebrated each year on November 11.) Today, Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Also, it is customary for the president or vice-president to give a speech honoring the contributions of the dead and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. About 5,000 people attend the ceremony annually. Several Southern states continue to set aside a special day for honoring the Confederate dead, which is usually called Confederate Memorial Day: Mississippi: Last Monday in April Alabama: Fourth Monday in April Georgia: April 26 North Carolina: May 10 South Carolina: May 10 Louisiana: June 3 Tennessee (Confederate Decoration Day): June 3 Texas (Confederate Heroes Day): January 19 Virginia: Last Monday in May Judy Foreman Lee UdyDee43@aol.com ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Hi! I did a search of the LDS microfilm "Index to File Boxes, Administrators, Conservators, and Executors" 1816-1865, #1688976. I would like to list some results. Estate of Carr, Geo. W. Carr Box 5 Estate Carr, W.M. ConservatorM.B. Carr Box 133 Estate Carr, William Conservator Emeline Carr Box 6 I didn't copy any other info. Also, none of the entries had dates listed. My suspicion is that the Geo. W. Carr is my third gr grandfather who died in the 'Civil War. The conservator probably is his father. Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, these estate papers have not been microfilmed. If anyone knows anything about these papers, I would appreciate hearing back. Are they easy to access?
