Published in The Southern Illinoisan 07 Sept 2007 Gayle Martin "Gramma Gayle" Brewner MCLEANSBORO - Gayle Martin Brewner, 84, died peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, in Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro, following a lengthy illness. She was born Sept. 17, 1923, in Bay Village, Ohio, the daughter of Ward and Lucille Martin. Gramma Gayle was loved and adored by her family and many friends. She is survived by her son James David Brewner Sr. of Vail, Ariz.; three daughters, Nancy Johnstone Crawford and husband, Bill, of Warren, Ohio; Kathleen Ann McGarry and husband, Brian, of Marion and Janie Greene of Carbondale. She will be dearly missed by her loving grandchildren in whom she took so much pride and delight, Julia Brown and husband, Mark, of Marietta, Ga., Lauren Koebel of Glen Carbon, Brennan and Sean McGarry of Chicago, and James and Patrick Brewner of California. She had two great-grandchildren; Anna Virginia and Jack Harper Brown of Marietta, Georgia. She also leaves behind her sister, Audrey Young, her friend and confidante of Lake City, Fla., and Audrey's children, Polly, Marty and Diana. Gayle's beloved son, James David Brewner Jr., preceded her in death on March 31, 2007; her brother, Ward also preceded her in death. Many of her friends may remember the long hours she put into making and maintaining the success of the College Inn Restaurant in Carbondale, which the family ran for many years. In her later years, she worked at Sears as a manager. After retiring from Sears, she founded the craft business Gramma Gayle's Musical Note totes, which became quite a success and were sold all over the United States. Gramma Gayle lived a beautiful and unselfish life with a heart overflowing with love for others that was so evident to all who knew her. She grew particularly fond of the loving caregivers at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. Her family is very appreciative of the quality of love and care they showed her. Services will be at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, in Gaskins Jones Funeral Home in Harrisburg. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery near Equality. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wabash Christian Retirement Center in care of the Memory Care Unit: 216 College Blvd. Carmi, IL 62821 Published in The Southern Illinoisan from 9/6/2007 - 9/7/2007. _____

Hospital in Marion. He was born June 1, 1917, in Saline County, to Noah Ellion Tate and Maude (Hammock) Tate. He married Reba (Thomas) Tate on Sept. 8, 1941, in Kentucky, and she preceded him in death July 23, 2001. He was a master sergeant in the Army, serving in World War II. He was a member of Raleigh Baptist Church, Raleigh Masonic Lodge 7, the Shriners, and he was also on the Board of Directors at the Bank of Harrisburg. After World War II, Wilburn and his brother, Cecil, bought their family service state called Tate's Brothers DX. He is survived by his daughter, Gwendolyn Tate Spuhler and husband, Michael, of Cape Coral, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and three brothers, George, Joe and Cecil. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, in Sloan Funeral Home, with the Rev. Scott Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Tate's Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2007, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Tate's Chapel Cemetery.
