Hello folks! I'm wondering what types of information are available for Pope and Saline Counties in trying to track Indian Ancestry? My family, like others, has had rumors of Indian ancestry in the lineage. Any ideas or resources would be appreciated! Thanks ahead of time! Cindy
The following information has been added to the Gallatin Co., ILGenWeb page at www.rootsweb.com/~ilgalla2/revlowrymarriages.html Rev. Lowry Marriages By JON MUSGRAVE Gallatin Co. ILGenWeb Coordinator Someone married your ancestors. If your ancestors' marriage took place in Hardin or Gallatin Counties in the early 20th Century, the Rev. Jackson M. Lowry may have performed the ceremony. Lowry's great-great-grandson, Jerry Smith, recently transcribed a number of marriages recorded by the Rev. Lowry in his journals. Below is a transcription Mr. Smith found in some of his grandfather's things. He said he double checked all of the spellings and dates. Please note: No. 55 is missing from the manuscript he has. According to Mr. Smith, Rev. Lowry was a Baptist minister near Shawneetown and Cave-in-Rock for much of his life. He was born on Nov. 10, 1857, and died on May 11, 1949. Smith's family records indicate he lived in Hardin, Gallatin, Jackson and Randolph counties. According to some of his writings, he also lived in Bertrand, Mo., from time to time in the 1880s. Forgive me for sending this message for the third time this week. I have never gotten any back as being posted. I don't think I have been recieving all the postings for this site so I re subscribed again. I will probably get double postings of some now. If I do, does anyone know how to fix it? ----- Original Message ----- From: Roger Owen Sent: Thursday, December 28, 2000 2:43 PM To: ILSALINE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Sarah Ellen (Turner) Owen Could someone tell me what Funeral Homes were in Harrisburg Illinois in 1907? Was it or one of them called the Harrisburg Funeral Home? Would there be more information on a person and their funeral that what is contained in the Harrisburg Funeral Home Records Book by Bernard W. Moore? On page four of this book it list the death of Owens, Mrs. Will.; Died May 26, 1907. Charged to Will Owens. Order given by Alf and Sherman Owens. Funeral sevices 11: a.m., May 28, 1907, and burial at Big Ridge Cem. I believe this is my great grandmother Sarah Ellen (Turner) Owen but would like more information and proof of this fact if availible. Will. I believe is William Temple Owen and Alf is Alfred C. Owen ( who was a younger brother of William's) and Sherman is Sarah's and William's son (my grandfather Walter Sherman Owen). If more records exists on her death that would maybe give her parent's names and other information. Sarah according to their marriage record would have been born about 1858 or 1859 if the age given on their marriage license was correct. It says she was 18 yrs. old in September of 1876 and living in Independance Township at the time of marriage to my great grandfather William Temple Owen. I would appreciate any help on finding more information on her and her parents. I have been to the Courthouse and Library in Harrisburg but have been unable to find her death certificate and the newspapers didn't go back that far. I am researching the John Henry Cotton family. I have much of the facts in the books about the cemeteries, marriages, etc. I have come across some puzzling information. Dora Cotton (1863-1897) married Matthew House (or Hause)a first marriage, on April 20, 1896. Someone had sent me information about a Dora (Cotton) Parsons who died in Harrisburg, who was 74 yrs. old at the time of death. Her father was William Cotton, born in TN, and her mother was Sarah Simpson Cotton, born in Illinois. This was an obituary from a book I thought. I am away from my home, and I don't have access to this information as it was sent to me, so I have no dates. My question is: could this have been the sister of John Henry Cotton? His daughter died in 1897, so she would not have had time to marry the second time. Or is something wrong with the birth and death dates of the Dora who married Matthew House? She would have been 21 when she married Matthew and he was 22. According to her birth & death dates, she would have been 33 at the time of her marriage. Were there 2 Dora's? I am so confused. Can you help me? Velda Moore vlchas@gate.net
Hello, Sometime back, I mention Emancipation Baptists and their role in Saline County. Somebody asked for more information and I never responded. Sorry. Here's a link to an article at the Daily Register website. I wrote the introduction to this story for the paper's Sesquicentennial edition a few years ago. The body of the article comes from the History of Liberty Baptist Church written by Ronald Nelson and the late Ralph Harrelson. Here's the link: http://www.dailyregister.com/history/emancibaptists092297.html Good reading, Jon Musgrave www.IllinoisHistory.com

In the 1860 census for Saline County there is a Thomas and Nancy Vantrese with a 12 year old daughter named Sarah C. along with 3 brothers and 2 sisters living in Raleigh.
Thank you for the information on Sarah's family. I will check out Thomas and Nancy Vantrease. Who are the 3 brothers and 2 sisters of Sarah C. Vantrease? Bless you for taking the time to do look-up for me. Does it say anything on Thomas, Nancy, Sarah and other's birthplace on your 1860 Census and the rest of the ages? Again many thank. Is anybody searching for Vantrease's family here in Saline? I have copy of marriage license of Henry Carter married to M. A. Souther in 1891, Saline. It show "By whom consent to Marriage given, Sarah C. Kelly". Henry's father is Douglas Carter. Henry's mother is Vantrease. We know that Henry have a mother name Sarah Carter. This Vantrease must be her maiden name. So his father Douglas Carter must have died and his mother remarried to Giles Kelly. I have found a marriage record of Mrs. Sarah Carter married to Giles Kelly in 1877 in Saline. But no luck in finding marriage record of Sarah Vantrease to Douglas Carter. Who is Sarah Vantrease? Is Sarah C. Kelly a VANTREASE? Who is Sarah Vantrease's parents? Or whoever is unknown Vantrease that married to Douglas Carter. If anybody can help me shed the mystery to this family, it will be much appreciated. P. S. Henry Carter was born between 1869 to 1870 in Illinois and his residence is Tate Township. Thank

Even John Karnes' kids didn't know much about him. I have asked his only living daughter... She says that her father was a bootlegger and that he ran away from home when he was young. Never spoke of his family at all. At one time they ran a river boat up and down the river. Just can't seem to pin point any connections. Hmm... Deanna
Sorry, this doesn't match any of the ones that I have - mine were earlier and I don't have his name as a child for any of these. Of course, the lack of a census for most of the area for 1890 doesn't help. I will keep your information and if I find anything further, I'll get back to you. Sorry I didn't have better news. Hi Saline County List, Does anybody here know anything on Giles Kelly married to Mrs. Sarah Carter on August 5, 1877 in Saline County, Illinois. They were living in Raleigh Precient, Saline County. In the 1880 Illinois Census, #227: Giles Kelly, 54 yrs. old, born in TN. Sarah Kelly, 33 yrs. old, born in TN. Mary Kelly, 16 yrs. old, IL. Ella Kelly, 12 yrs. old, IL. Alfred Kelly, 13 yrs. old, IL. Henry Kelly, 9 yrs. old, IL. Sam Kelly, 8 yrs. old, IL. Grant Kelly, 6 yrs. old, IL. Nevada Kelly, 1 yr. old, IL. William Kelly, January 6/12 month old, IL. I do not know why it listed all the children KELLY, but on Henry, he should be Henry Carter. He have a brothers that suppose to be Sam Carter, Alfred Carter, and sister Ellie Carter. I have been looking everywhere for the marriage of William Carter to Sarah ? maybe Vantrease and trying to find out what happen to Mrs. Sarah Carter's husband. Did he died? What happen to Sarah's first husband for her to be married to Giles Kelly. If anybody can shed the mystery to this family, I will appreciated so much if you can help me. Thanks. I believe this regiment was formed in Saline Co. I would love to hear any suggestions for sources of information such as local books etc. I have the numbers I need from the Civil War Pension Index and am patiently (?) waiting for my NATF Form 80. Is there anyone out there with a "magical" knowledge of the Civil War resources related to the Southern IL area. Thanks to all, and Happy Holidays. > > Debbie > rose@ccountry.net > searching PRATHER/DECKER >
