    3. I can remember the name. Left Eldorado in 1940 but visited family there quite often. There was a school named Bixler School, right of the road to Equality. Did you live in Eldorado? 3. Dear ILSaline-L list subscribers, The following is off the topic of Saline county genealogy. However, I feel if it can help just one person save their hard earned genealogy research and contacts, it will not have been in vain. I have seen many posts on e-mail lists to the effect of "I have lost all of my e-mail and address book files." Awhile back, I too, was having this problem with Microsoft Office 2000. I read all the documentation I could find regarding reinstalling Microsoft Office 2000, because I sure did not want to lose any of my documents. The Microsoft documentation stated "that you can reinstall Microsoft Office 2000 without losing your document files" well, the "My Document" files were all right after the reinstallation but I had lost all of my e-mail and address book files in the Microsoft Outlook folders. After some time by painstakingly going thru all the files on my computer, I finally found all of my old e-mails and address book files. To make a long story short. If you are having this problem. Cheer-up there still may be hope. :) Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Bill Searching: HICKS/FOLLOWELL/WOMACK/RICE/BAKER/CLARK/GULLEDGE/RAWLINS/GRINDSTAFF/in Saline County

    2. I was at the Saline County Sheriff's Department 2 weekends ago -- and I remember seeing a picture there that looks just like you...................... <grin> I will ask Deputy Hicks is they have those records for you though if no one else has access. He's finally realizing how IMPORTANT all this genealogy "stuff" is to us! So he will help. Not too long ago I was in contact with a lady doing research on her Baker line -- in Pope County - I think. You might write to that list and she will help you. Kathy Kathleen HAYES LaRose Searching: HICKS, ROBERTSON, SHELDON, AND STONE in Southern Illinois

    2. sob ......... I wish I could find BAKER cousins like that. Anyone in Harrisburg able to go over to the Police station and see if they have any pictures on the wall ? lol. On a serious note tho, does anyone know if the Harrisburg Police Dept has any records on their ex employees ?? Along the geneology lines anyway ? It has been my understanding that at least 2 of my Baker clan were cops (go figure) . I believe that one was Benjamin Baker (not sure if it was Brooks or Browder for middle name) the other would have been JAMES JASPER BAKER 1843 - 1905. In the obit of James wife (Francis Amanda Horning Baker) it mentions that she was the widow of James J Baker one of the first Marshalls. As the Saline Co Sherriff had nothing at that time, I assume he may have been a town marshall ? any thots are greatly appreciated, thanks, steve stuck in the hills of WV "FREE HILLS ! ! delivery extra ! 2. Hi Bill, Yes, what a fantastic coincidence! I have to say I have a million questions, some of which I'm sure you can answer. Please be more specific on your line from Walter. What's your full name and where do you live? Maybe we should switch to our personal e-mails. Would you be my Uncle Walter's grandson? the son of who? Of course, Walter had a different mother , Elnora Shaver (died early) than my mother did, Nannie Bradshaw. I have a little bit on that. You probably know that I'm a son of Rebecca Morris, a twin of Mary Morris Barnes. Mary married Homer Barnes and there are a lot of those still around Eldorado and in the Gary, Ind. area. John, the oldest, is about to bite the dust though. You say Thomas Delton? We and the Barneses don't agree on that middle name. My mother told me it was Delano. Do you have anything in writing that shows T.D.'s signature or a document with his middle name? I have tried but they're all "T.D." or Thomas D. Morris. I have a bit of info. on T.D.'s brothers and his father and uncles, but I've deduced a lot from military records from the Civil War. I need more there. I also lost track of T.D.'s grandfather, William Morris and his grandmother, Charlotte, after they moved to Eldorado in about 1839. William and Charlotte were born in 1803 and 1804 in Virginia and N.C. They had some of their children somewhere in Tenn. before moving to Eldorado. Do you have more on this? Sooner or later I am going to have to find out the rest, but I've had my hands full for the last nearly two years trying to learn the Heltsley/Morris families plus understand where we lived in eastern and western Ky. and Southern Illinois. Also that story of Nigger Hill would be the second and final, followup such outbreak, according to the way I heard it. If there's a way I could borrow those books, please do it. Or if there's somewhere I can buy them or otherwise get access. I had lost track of Walter's side of the family. Now that I'm looking at the records I have, I see you must be Vera's son. she married an Earl Johnson. Wasn't she the one who lived in Rockford, Ill.? Off the top of my head, it must have been Mona, widow of J.B. Lassater, who I talked to here in Tucson by telephone a bunch of years ago. She and her son lived here about the time I got here in 1967. Sadly, I wasn't too interested in genealogy or family at the time. She has died, I'm told, and I don't know what's happened to her son. Don't know for sure how Lassater is spelled. There are lots of variations. And then there was Glen Morris, who died April 12, 1975. Most of what I know on Walter's family I got from Pat Barnes Ashby, who is interested in this sort of thing in Eldorado, but she doesn't have a computer. Please answer in detail and it should improve our combined knowledge of that side of our family considerably. This is exciting! Cousin Ernie Heltsley

    2. Bill, Why Morrises? Just so happens our maternal line is Morris. T.D. Morris was my grandfather there in Eldorado. Sure, we knew Gene Haile. Football star etc. I don't remember much tho. I was six years younger, probably. Of course, the Kingston boys, Floyd and Don, we all knew. It seems like Jake was in the same school class as Gene, but Jake didn't go to Washington School. I think Don did and I did. We didn't get to Eldorado till 1944. My mother and dad moved out in the 'mid-30s to Kentucky to work in the coal mines. My mother and some of my bros and sisters were born in Eldorado. When we got to Eldorado Jake was a sophomore or junior in h.s. in Feb. '44. Why Fairfield? The mines or farm? I remember that town for the Shelton brothers. I met one Shelton in about '54, Carl, maybe. Was a nice guy to me. He must have been a cousin or so of the notorious ones. I was just reading recently about "Bloody Williamson." Harrisburg and Eldorado or Fairfield weren't as bloody but they all were pretty wild in certain periods. By the way, Bill, do you know any history of Eldorado that would help me on my book on my family I'm trying to do? There doesn't seem to be much around, even on running the Negroes out of town, probably in the early 1900s, maybe '20s. I visited there last August but I didn't find a lot. Thanks for answering. 3. Ernie: (Hello cousin) My geeat grandfather was T.D. Morris, Thomas Delton. Walter, T.D's son, was my grandfather, Vera was my mother. When I saw your last name it kind of rung a bell and I remember it had something to do with T.D. What a small world. I have quite a bit of material that I am sure you could use. The reason I asked about Gene, he is dying of cancer. Talked with his wife the other night and it is a matter of time. In the hospital iin Nashville. Washington School was where I spent my first 6 1/2 years. Dad worked for Stinson Grocery in Eldorado and when it closed he found a job as a meat cutter in Fairfield. We moved when I was in the 7th grade. Yes, Fairfield was known for the Shelton brothers. An interesting place! You are probably talking about Little Carl. He dated one of my friends and I ran around with his cousin at the skating rink. They both were of the Shelton clan. I have a couple of books about the early history but they are on loan now. When I get them back, I'll send you their titles. The blacks lived around Nigger Hill mine, on the south side of the road on the way to Shawaneetown, just outside of Eldorado. Do you remember where Bixler School is, along the railroad on the way to Equality? The story I got from Dud, Walter, was that there was a box supper one night at Bixler School and someone rocked the building and roof. Some over anxious men swore it was the blacks so they went home, got their guns and burned the homes and ran the folk out of town. One of the blacka men, George Elliott, became a political force in Decatur. He was a very close friend of Dud. Have you ever heard that story? I don't know the dates of this. I know that when I was in college, 1946, I was in Decatur one time and looked Mr. Elliott up and he was a very active man. Let's keep in touch. Also swap some info about our family. Peace.
