Charlie A. Baker was born in 1867 and Died in 1930. His wife, Samantha Nations was born Feb 9, 1867 and she died in 1942. On my friends grandmothers side. His gg GF name was Leonard Ward. He was born in White County near Stealeys Water Mill on July 1, 1836. He married Tabather Graham on Oct 14, 1857. They gave birth to Darwin Beecher Ward on Sept 5, 1867. He married Ella Lamp in Carmi, Ill. Lonard Wards parents were Josiah and Lucy Ward. I am trying to locate these people for my Friend Darrell Baker who lives in WV. Does any of this ring any bells? The information that he had is Charlie was buried in a Cemetery located near Broughton. There was two cemeteries close together and you had to go by one to get to the other. That is all the information that he had. Thanks. Jim At 04:36 PM 3/11/01 -0500, you wrote: >There's no Charles at Baker Cemetery. Here in Texas, they removed two bronze placards with the Confederate flag embedded from the Austin, Texas capitol buildings while George W. Bush was still Governor. It was after the SC incident. There was a mild protest after it was done. No one knew that it was going to be done. It was not voted on. People in charge just removed the placards. Georgia has now redone its state flag to remove the embedded Confederate flag. The only remaining state where the Confederate flag remains embedded is Mississippi. This is the same problem as Squaw. The indians say that it means prostitute, and they want it removed from names across the nation. An example is Squaw Valley. Many areas have already changed the name. Would anyone be able to find when a Strutton Jones of Eldorado died? He was from Cottage Grove and married my dads aunt Nancy Bixler in 1887. They divorced in 1897. Was trying to find when he died. Thanks, Johnny Bond
Hi Carla, Well this one is "close and almost" as they say. I don't know how many unrelated Morris families there were in Saline County, but I have one. There's no Sarah, that I know of. My maternal grandfather, Thomas D. Morris, was in Eldorado in 1858. His father, John F., was born in Lincoln County,Tenn. in 1829. His father came from N.C. by way of Lincoln County, Tenn. But I guess that fits a lot of pioneers in those days. John's older sister, Mary Morris b 1828. It gets confusing. Have question let me know. Ernie Heltsley/Tucson/ex-Eldoradoan/native Ky.
Is anyone on the Gallatin or Saline Co. lists researching the settlers who came to this area before 1810? I descend from Hankerson Rude who settled by 1810 as one of his sons was born in IL in 1810. I am trying to determine exactly when Hankerson Rude arrived, where he came from, and with which other families he traveled. In several history books it is said that some early settlers came from Mt. Airy, Tennessee. The surnames listed as being these settlers from Mt. Airy, TN, were JORDAN, ESTES, and RUDE. However, this is in conflict with the research done on Chism Estes and published in the book, "Following the Chism Estes Trail" by Doris Nelson. Based on Warren Co., KY, tax records and the fact that Chism Estes purchased land there in 1804, Chism Estes lived in Warren Co., KY, as did his in-laws the Jordans. They did not live in Mt. Airy, TN. Nothing in the book makes a connection between the Estes family and Mt. Airy, TN. Doris Nelson's opinion was that other early settlers had come from Mt. Airy, NC (not TN). Per the book, the Jordans and Chism Estes came to southern Illinois in 1806; for sure they were there in 1807 as their names appear on an 1807 list of squatters which Ms. Nelson has in her book. Hankerson Rude is not on the 1807 list; thus, I do not think he traveled with the Chism Estes-Francis Jordan group of 1806. However, Ms. Nelson does say that Chism Estes' brother Absalom Estes left Warren Co., KY, and settled "around 1810", but she did not expand on Absalom's settlement and did not refer to any families traveling with him. It is possible that the authors of the history book got Chism and Absalom Estes confused, and that Hankerson RUDE came with Absalom Estes some time between 1808-1810. I descend from Hankerson Rude's daughter Phoebe who was born in KY c. 1805-06. I do not know where she was born in KY. If Hankerson Rude followed Chism Estes to Illinois or came to Illinois with his brother, Hankerson likely lived in or near Warren Co. -- and not in TN. Has anyone on the list researched settlers before 1810? Can you advice me on where I should be looking for pre-statehood records for this area? Would it be the State Archives? If so, what record groups and can I access them by mail? Any help would be appreciated. -- Helen Graves
Danny, Don't know about the first book mentioned, but the 2nd one is on a list of the books that are available thru the Saline Co. Gen. Soc. They're located in downtown Harrisburg. I've been there, but am not familiar with street names. Just ask someone in the area. Very nice folks in Harrisburg, as well as at the Gen. Soc. The book is $35 if picked up - $40 if mailed. You could ask them about the book on Raleigh. They might know where it can be purchased.
