    3. Steve- I have a couple of questions for you: You suggested that Willis A. is the son of Joseph B. and Sarah Anna - was he their firstborn? I only have William B., Simpson Shaw and Joseph B., Jr. as their children. However, I think I'm basing that on the 1850 census and Willis A. would have been already married by that date. Were there other children besides the three I have listed? I have the marriage date for John and Margaret Louisa as 7/15/1841 in Gallatin County, IL. I'm really not sure what the 12/9/1868 refers to, I don't have death dates for John or Margaret. I am working with another researcher who is a direct descendant (we believe) of John and Margaret, she is wanting more information as well. I have John (b. 1802) & Margaret's (b. 1823) children as: Hartwell B. (1825-1868), probably from a previous marriage? Richard (?-?) George (?-?) Amanda L. (1842 - ?) William (1846-?) Isaac Newton (1847-?) Margaret (1849-?) Jiney A. (1851-?) James Alexander (1856-?) I hope this helps. Thanks to everyone who responded with information regarding Willis A. and Carena. 3. Dear List, It's been a while since I posted this so I thought I would try again. I'm looking for death and burial information on, and descendants of, James Shook born about 1830 in Bedford County, TN. Clues lead me to believe he died between Jul 1884 and Oct 1888. In Glem Minor's Probate Index for Gallatin County, IL he lists James Shook, Box 90, however when I was at the courthouse in Shawneetown I found no James Shook in Box 90, nor James Shook listed in the death records. It was at the end of the day and I only had time to ask for Probate Box 90. I hope to go back for a visit soon. Any suggestions? On James Shook and Sarah (WOMACK) CAVENS marriage record he lists his parents as Abraham Shook and Nancy GIPSON(?). This is the first document I have found that names his parents. He was married about 1848 probably in TN, first wife Catherine HART, born about 1820, Bedford Co, TN, died probably before the 1860 Federal Census. They had 4, perhaps 5 children. Nancy Jane Shook, Elizabeth Hannah Shook, Aggie Julia Shook, William "Bud" Howard Shook, and Leatha "Leak" Shook(?). Married 1861 in White Co, IL, second wife Emaline (JOHNSON) PEARCE, 1831-1865 widow of Russian B Pearce, 1827-1858. They had 3 children: Richard Shook, Ulyses Winfield Shook, and Alexander Shook. Married 1868, Gallatin County, IL, third wife Priscilla Elizabeth (DAVIS) JOHNSON, 1830-1878. They had two children, John David Shook and Sara "Sallie" Shook. John David Shook married Jennie BLAIR in 1903 and they had Roy G Shook, 1904-1973, who was a Circuit Clerk in Gallatin Co, IL. Married 1881, Gallatin Co, IL 4th wife Sarah Elizabeth (WOMACK) CAVENS, born abt 1851-died after Oct 1888. They had two children, Anna May Shook, and Horace A Shook. Sarah married Hiram H SHELBY, her 5th husband on 20 Oct 1888. Thank you for any information or suggestions. Janice Knotter Columbus, OH Janice@Knotter.com

    2. Hi Kate, I saw that you were researching the Stricklin family. I have a couple of Stricklin women in my line that I've been trying to track and wondered if they were in your line. They are both named Elizabeth Stricklin. One was married to John S. Frohock and died sometime after 1880. The other was married to Elijah Davis and was born about 1832. If you or anyone else has anything on these lines, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks in advance, John Edwards

    3. Does anyone on this list have any information on: Willis A. Stricklin (ca. 1829 - 1864) who married Carena C. Arnold (1832-?) I'm researching my Stricklin line and cannot figure out how Willis fits in - does anyone know who his parents were? What's really confusing me is that Willis and Carena had a son named Isaac Newton (1850-?) who married Rena A. Henderson. Isaac and Rena appear on the 1880 Saline County census. I also have an Isaac Newton Stricklin born 1847 who is the son of John Stricklin and Margaret Louisa Barker. I orginally thought this Isaac married Rena A. Henderson, but in the current Issue of "The Saga of Southern Illinois" pg 38 he is listed as the son of Willis A. and Carena. Help! 3. Hi Donna, This is the information I have. Mary E. RICE is on the 1880 census for Johnson County, Goreville township married to Isic Countz. Her age is listed as 25, her oldest son, Martin (James Martin) was eight. Isic was 40. The census recorder had a time with the numbers "2" and "3", but comparing them to other numbers on the page, it is definitely a 25. The cemetery that she is buried in is Friendship Cemetery, near Goreville, Johnson County. The death certificate indicates she was born in Union County. There is no marker for her. There's a field stone near the marker of her son and it is probably hers but no way to prove it. DOD November 29, 1880, age given 35. Duration of illness was six months, so she was sick when the census was taken. The 1880 census was taken on June 24. Age 35 would make her closer to Isaac's age, but we know women married early in those days so she could have been 25. Or, she may have been 35 at the time of death, married at 27 and Isaac was her second husband. The Union County Courthouse, the Johnson County Courthouse and census reports have been researched by one of my cousins, but no luck. I cannot find her on any census earlier than the 1880 census. Maybe she was an orphan and took the name of her adoptive parents. Sure is a brick wall. Thanks for any help or direction. 3. The society has directions to all of the cemetaries in Saline county. Also there are books with listings for many of the cemetaries. The city hall is across the street and down one block. -----Original Message----- From: William Johnson <padrewc@home.com> To: ILSALINE-L@rootsweb.com <ILSALINE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, April 10, 2001 7:58 PM Subject: Re: [ILSALINE-L] COONS, Isaac/RICE, Mary E. (SEARCHING) Sharlene: I understand there is a Historical Society across the street from the Court House. That should be a good place to start. There are many cemeteries in Saline County and I imagine they could locate them for you. In the County Clerk's Office, ask for Stephanie as she is really a great help. Good luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sharlene Meyer" <sharmeye@usmo.com> To: <ILSALINE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 10, 2001 4:52 PM Subject: [ILSALINE-L] COONS, Isaac/RICE, Mary E.
