I don't know about the McGuinns, but I do know about the census... Yes, a woman can be head of house if her husband is absent. Check the marital status column(s) -- it should tell if she is married, widowed, or divorced. Different census years show different info, but the time period that you are asking about will tell. By the way, the 1900-10 census will show the number of years married, & 1910 also shows how many marriages a person had (M1, M2, M3, etc). Both years also show the number of children a woman has given birth to & how many are living. These extra goodies are not found on the Soundex. I am trying to identify the parentage of Rose Ann, who married Meeks Haley; next door in the 1850 census is the family of "Francis Gragg". Is this her father? (The IGI says that her maiden name is "Rose Ann Gregg") I am willing to share data with anyone researching the HALEY and GREGG surnames. Rolene Eichman Kiesling, Groveland, CA
I recently researched the family of Thompson M. Young (b. 1833) and his wife Sarah Haley (b. 1844), while in Salt Lake and would like to share data re: this line. They both died in Kansas, however, the HALEY family appears in the 1850 and 1860 census records for Saline County. Can anyone identify Joseph YOUNG, died near Vicksburg, Mississippi 19 February 1863? Thompson M. Young is the administrator of his estate in Saline County. Are they brothers? Rolene Kiesling, Groveland, CA

We were just there last week and found my gg grandmother Letha Ann (Smith)Upchurch (1836-1899), however I cannot find where her husband is buried - Joseph B. Upchurch (1829-1915). So Bonnie, now that I've calmed down and called my Pop (he's very excited) I was wondering if you know my Pop? His name is William Donald Smith, but went by Don Smith. I also attended at that same time and was acquainted with him. He would probably have been born in 1932-33, because I was born in 1933 (I was the youngest student in school when I was a Freshman.) We just had our 50th Class Reunion last year, and Bennie attended it. The address I have in my book for him is: 27048 Alabanbra Dr., Punta Gorda, FL, 33955. The same address was also listed in the 40th Year Class Reunion, so it seems that he has lived there for quite awhile. I remember him well, even though I only see him at our Class Reunions...which are every 5 years. Hope this will be a help in locating him.
