However in the 1870 Clinton, Iowa census, wife Elizabeth with all her children was shown, but no James. According to her obituary in May 1903, in Jamestown, North Dakota, it states that James died 36 years previously. This ties in with an account by son George Thomas that he had to sell newspapers in Chicago in the mid 1860's to help his widowed mother. Although I know there is a lack of death records in Chicago around 1866/7, I have been trying for years to find such a record ( family details on www.parkhouseonline.com ). It may be that he died at sea, or on the Great lakes as he was originaly a ship's carpenter. Can anyone help??
