That is a European term only. Here in the U.S., they are simply called mayor, if they were elected as such. Perhaps your ancestor who was "Lord Mayor" came to visit somewhere in Illinois and was recognized in a paper. You'd have to know which one in order to find which paper they are listed in. If you do know which one it was and where they were living, and what year, then let me know and I'll see about getting that paper and see what it says.
