You don't really state if he joined in Indiana or Illinois. My ancestors served and are in this Roll of Honor for Illinois Soldiers. My grandpa was buried in a private cemetery but is still listed in the Roll of Honor for soldiers buried in Illinois. Do a google search for Illinois State Archives and check out their online databases. It's really a great site but, unfortunately, the Global Search won't always work, so you may have to search Civil War soldiers separately. If you can find one you think is yours, the muster in/out roll can be ordered. It gives a physical description, when and where they mustered in/out and place of residence. Which 1860 census is he in?
