He was assigned to Company H, 97 regiment, Illinois infantry. His enlistment was for 3 years. He fought in the Mobile and Red River Campaigns. On July 29, 1865, he was transferred to Company E, 37th Regiment, Illinois Infantry. He was mustered out at Houston, Texas on May 15, 1866. His brother, Philipp "Fridor" Isidore Wagner, also joined the Army at the same time and they were in the same Company. Damian and Philipp arrived home two months after the death of their father, Leonhard "Leonard" Wagner. Civil War Veteran record: Rank: Private Enlisted in Company H, 97th regiment, Illinois infantry on March 28, 1864. Transferred to to Company E, 37th Regiment, Illinois Infantry on July 29, 1865.
