Author: amydefalco Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.unknown/12847.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks for the suggestions, all. I've been going at this geneology thing for about 20 years now, and have just about everything on the DeFalco clan (my paternal grandfather, his siblings, and parents). I very much appreciate the obits on my dad's aunts and uncles, I have the names of dad's cousins written down on scraps of paper, but I haven't added them to my tree yet :) It's my grandma that is the missing link (her married name when she passed away was Volpentesto, by the way - she had remarried after being widowed fairly young). I think I will try and reach out to my aunt and see if she's agreable to help in the quest to obtain grandma's birthmother's name. I participate in one of the genetic geneology research sites, and have some hits on possible genetic "cousins" that don't seem to match with my mom (whose ancestors are primarily Polish/Ukranian/Hungarian), or with my paternal grandfather's line (Italian) so that restarted my curiosity with trying to trace my grandmother's line. I'm having my dad tested too (provided my sis can explain what he needs to do for the test - he's got mild dementia) to see if I can confirm these genetic "cousins" are on his line. I believe that Grandma's younger brother (biological son of her adoptive father) and one younger sister may still be alive - I may also be able to reach out to them. I guess I have some letters to write :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: RVcook Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.unknown/12847.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Amy, You may want to check into the adoption laws for the state of Illinois. Regulations vary by state and you may not be able to obtain a copy of her "real" birth certificate. As far as Cook county death records, certificates issued for genealogical purposes must be 20 yrs. or older. Since your grandmother passed in 2001, this situation does not qualify. If you are interested in pursuing this, you should start with family and see how far that takes you. Although in certain situations, relatives can be less than forthcoming, they can also open up and share information that you would otherwise not be privy to. Let's hope that is the situation for you. Good luck to you on your quest. Donna Hodach-Price Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: amydefalco Surnames: Carrier Classification: birth Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.unknown/12847/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Looking for a needle in haystack. My paternal grandmother was born (according to family records) Feb 1917 and was adopted (supposedly) through Catholic Charities by Fred and Mamie Carrier (nee Mehan). There is no birth certificate on record for her with Illinois Vital Statistics (despite her working for 30 years for Illinois Bell Telephone). Her maiden name was Katherine (sometimes spelled Catherine) Louise Carrier. She passed away in 2001. Surviving children are my father (who isn't in the best of health) and his sister. I'm wondering, since there does not seem to be a delayed or amended birth cert on file for her with IL Vital Records, whether or not it's worth the effort to bug my aunt (who I haven't been in touch with for years) for Grandma's death certificate and/or if she would even sign the form to petition for the birth records. Anyone have any luck with Catholic Charities? I know that my grandmother grew up in the area near where the Univ of IL at Chicago stands today (S. Blue Island Ave). I'm not sure what Parish her family belonged to, or even if it's still standing today. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated (I live out of state, so any request for documentation would have to be done via post) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: jabbott047 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.unknown/12844/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm searching for the proverbial "needle in a haystack." Does anyone have an ABBOTT connection or family that moved from New York to Indiana in the late 1700's to early 1800's that ties in with the following information? 1. They had at least two male children in the family named William and Isaiah? Isaiah was spelled with several variations, as was the surname. 2.Isaiah states he was born in Indiana in 1814, unknown where William was born, although early census showed him to be in the same age group as Isaiah. 3. Isaiah could possibly have changed his name from Josiah, as he purchased land in Illinois under this name with his brother in September of 1849. 4. The New York connection comes from Isaiah telling a census enumerator in 1860 that his parents were born in New York. I have exhausted searches in both Illinois and Indiana, and Isaiah is turning out to be quite elusive. Its almost as if he and his brother appeared out of nowhere. Yet I know that somewhere out there lies a link. I realize this isn't much to go on, but being disabled and surviving on fixed income, makes it almost impossible for me to purchase documentation. I am cross posting this information to the Illinois, Indiana, and Abbott boards as well. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have a Henry BASTION, b. 8 Mar. 1783 in Schenectady NY, married to Neeltje or Eleanor SCHERMERHORN, b. 22 Apr. 1781 also Schenctady. She had her last child there 20 Feb. 1821. Sometime that year the family moved to Floyd Co, IN. I can find no record at all of her after that. She might have died in childbirth, but I've corresponded with descendants of that child, so I know the baby survived. The NY death records haven't turned her up. Or she might have come to IN. So I'm looking for a death record of her in IN. I'm also looking for a marriage record of Henry in Floyd Co or nearby. He was living in Jackson Co. in 1822, where he appears on the tax rolls, and again in 1850, where he is on the census, no wife, with his daughter, Helen BURGESS and her husband George. I've found a couple of marriage records in the IN index in the 1820s and 1830s, but not as complete as what you cite. Henry's pa! rents were Johannes BASTIAANSE (maybe given as John Bastion; Henry changed his name from Hendrick Bastiaanse when he moved to IN) and Eva VAN SCHAICK. I don't know if you can help, but it would be wonderful to finally know when and where she died. And it would be good to know if he remarried and to whom. There are other Henry Bastions in IN at the time, so without an age on the marriage record it's tricky. Thanks, Doris Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
