Dear Karima and List I can appreciate your comment about discussing Family Tree Maker on this list, however Id like to address that please..As someone who is fairly new to this, (and being on webtv rather than a computer) I dont know about alot of the places (like Family Tree Maker) and the ones I do know about and have tried to navigate, I can sometimes get a hit. but most times not, so I have asked "how" to use these sites when I get to them, where to look, what to input etc...and I didnt even know there was a URL for Family Tree Maker list, so though I understand why youve asked to put an end to this thread I really appreciated reading it and the information I gleened from it. As a "newbie" I can use all the help I can get : ) I just wanted to explain it from this end. Thanks to everyone for all the great information you post.. Can anyone tell me how I can find out where these dwellings were located? this is from the 1860 US CENSUS Tompkins Township IL page 227 Dwelling1574/Family1584 Thomas RILEY,33,farmer b IRE, Mary,52,bIRE,William,13 b IRE Iam trying to find this location and if Thomas was Marys husband or son.Mary is my greatgreatgrandmother...In 1870 she is in Iowa as a widow with son-in-law Lawrence FITZSIMMONS so I dont know who my greatgreatgrandfather was or anything about him. Also William, as far as we can tell was born in IL not IRE. It is believed they came to the US about 1843, and had a daughter,Bridget also..who is mentioned here 1860 US CENSUS Tompkins Township IL p0age 232 Dwelling1610/Family1620 Lawrence FITZSIMMONS,22 Day Laborer, b. IRE, Fidelia16, b IRE "Fidelia" is aka Bridget, Adelia, Deilah, Delia, Odelia, Adelia, Odillia, Adillia,Bedelia,Bedellia,...so far I have found her listed in some of her childrens baptismal records with all these different names... I know Bridget was born in IRE came to USA about 1843..married Lawrence in 1856 in Warren County IL..I have never seen ny records this is just what Ive found online, a newspaper announcement.. I thought she was about 16 when they married, but could be wrong, if this census is right!!!! The family and Mary moved to Iowa and many years later to Nebraska where Bridget died, somewhere in Nebraska, in about 1903 -1904, cant find anything about her at all anywhere...Mary also moved to Nebraska and died in Omaha August 1907 but cant find any obit for her either.. Any help is appreciated. Cris Atwater CA

Linda, I had to remove them and then put them in in the right order for it to work. But it did work! Linda also.
George Johnson appears in the 1870 census of Hennepin, MN. He signed his sister's wedding certificate as a witness with his wife, Annie, in 1872, and that's how I found him in Hennepin in 1870. It's the 1860 that I am most interested in. Since their residence was marked Thornton (for both boys) I'd think their mom, dad, and at least their sister Hannah, born 1855, would be in Thornton if these two boys enlisted in 1864. Their Dad bought land in Kandiyohi, MN in 1865. I'm thinking maybe they all moved up there after these two boys were discharged in 1865. Hans was living next to his father in 1870 and George was in law enforcement in Minnesapolis.
In the 1860 census there is a George Johnson living in Crabapple, Iroquois co. Ill.(which is just a county away, to the south of Thorton) He is listed as 14 years old and birth place unknown. Maybe this is why you can't find a George Johnson turning up in the 1860 Illinois census as being born in Norway? He was living with Simpson and Phebe Gallsmore?/Gillmore? Also, Thorton was very close to the Indiana border. You may want to check in Indiana for your George Johnson.
Joan, The thing that I LOVE about Heritage quest, is that you have so many options that you don't have on, say, ancestry.com. First of all, you have an age range to work with instead of just one age. You can use this feature if you know aprox what age range the person was in and you know their first name and the county that they should be in - but you are not sure of the spelling of the last name that was used... For instance, if I am looking for a Martha Snodgrass and I know that she is between 11-13 and that the family name has been listed from everything to Snoodgross to Snodgriss and they lived in Iroquois Co., Illinois and most were born in Indiana - all I would do is fill in these fields: First name: Martha age: 11-20 Gender: Female Race: White State: Illinois County: Iroquois Born: Indiana This would bring up all the Martha's (or whomever) that fit the criterion for your person - and I bet you find her faster this way than any other way - even on ancestry! I have found more people this way - people that I COULDN'T find on ancestry - just because they didn't have the age range option... Good Luck to you! Leslie
I think you should check out the George Johnson that is living in Grundy co., Nettle Creek twp, Ill., in the 1870 census on Heritage Quest. He is listed as being 23 years old but on the census image itself it looks more like he is listed as 25 to me. That could make him the George Johnson that you are researching. And he is born in Norway.
I just received a Civil War Muster Roll from the State of Illinois showing two members of my family, brothers George H. Johnson, 21 (in 1864) and Hans Johnson, 24. For the town of residence, it says Thornton. Could anyone tell me what to browse on Heritage Quest? If I put in Thornton, it shows me several choices. Their sister appears (married) in 1860 in Bloom Township, Thornton P.O. It's quite confusing as I've looked for all males born in Norway in Illinois in 1860 and came up blank. They enlisted Feb. 29, 1864 and were mustered out July 24, 1865. I know they were both in Minnesota by 1870 but I expected to see them in Illinois in 1860. They arrived from Norway in 1852. Thanks for any direction. Joan in Illinois

Hello, I am looking for a marriage c.1904 and a birth c.1905 somewhere in Illinois. I do not know the county for either event. Is there a way to search without knowing the county or should I spend my time trying to figure that out first (they spent little time in Illinois before moving westward)? It looks pretty straightforward once the county is known but was wondering if there were some STATEWIDE indexes for AFTER 1900 available that might shortcut this search. Thanks for any advice. _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. Find.
