Hi Cris, You may not be doing anything wrong! They simply are not there. I tried several serarches with no hits as well. IL became a state in about 1817 and began recording marriages in 1825. But it was not until 1875 that they became somewhat regluarly recorded and and not until 1916 that recording was mandatory. A lot of marriages simply did not get recorded for a variety of reasons. I had great-great grandparents who married in 1858 but their marriage in 1858 was not recorded. Until 1879! So the registration showed the marriage as occuring in 1879. The likely explanation I was given is that the Justice of the Peace failed to record it. Maybe later, after he died, someone in the family decided to haul his records down to the courthouse. THEN they got recorded. I was told this was not an uncommon scenario. Bill in Denver
Hi Cris, I went to the Illinois cyberdrive site and input the basic of Fitzsimmons and statewide and yielded nothing and then input the first part of the name, which would be Fit (which would give you Fit, plus everything after that basic name), and found no Lawrence... Then I did the same for the full name Riley and Ril and found no Bridget. Next, I was curious as to whether Warren County even had ANY marriages from that time frame in the database. So I in put Fit.. Warren county and found none. But, I put in Ril - Warren County and found about a dozen Riley's, none of which were Bridget. But it did tell me that there were marriage records from as early as 1840 in the database (there were some from 1860, too). Are you sure that Lawrence went by that name and are you sure that Mary Riley wasn't married before? She may have went by either a different first name - or even a different last name. For example, my G Grandmothers name was Jeannette - but she went by the name of either "Bid" or "Nettie". Go figure... It could be that this document doesn't exist in the archives at all because of improper filing - or it may be sitting in a basement somewhere and not archived - or worse yet - was destroyed in a fire. If I were you I would call, not write, the county in question and tell them what you are looking for. They would be the best guides for you.
In this case, I would contact the Warren County Genealogical Society which has a nice collection at the Warren County Library in Monmouth. This is an active group with a sizeable collection of Warren County materials, which I have used before (I don't have time anymore though). There is information on Warren County research here: http://www.wcig.net/resources.htm Michael http://www.rootdig.com On Sat, 19 Mar 2005 18:55:03 -0800, crazyangel25@webtv.net <crazyangel25@webtv.net> wrote: > Hi List, > Im just getting around to some posts Ive saved the past week, been too > busy to really give them much time this week.. > I have tried the Illinois State Archives several times and have never > found anything for my greatgrandfather and ggrandmother Lawrence > FITZSIMMONS, and Bridget RILEY. Hi List, Im just getting around to some posts Ive saved the past week, been too busy to really give them much time this week.. I have tried the Illinois State Archives several times and have never found anything for my greatgrandfather and ggrandmother Lawrence FITZSIMMONS, and Bridget RILEY. Although I know for certain they were married in Warren County in 1860. Am I doing something wrong when I get there? I have followed the directions, Ive added the comma after the name, Ive tried different spellings and different ways of searching, Ive put things in and taken things out, but no matter what I always come up with nothing. The following is a post from Joan and I clicked on the links which bring me to the same place but it still comes back with nothing.. <snip>" Try the Illinois State Archives online databases--a wealth of information. _http://www.ilsos.net/GenealogyMWeb/globsrch.html_ (http://www.ilsos.net/GenealogyMWeb/globsrch.html) Joan in Illinois " Cris Atwater California

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Fh.2ADI/5790 Message Board Post: A man in Calif. ordered a death certificate from "the State" (I'm not sure where) rather than our local courthouse. In our county there are two distinct families who share the same surname. (One large group (residing mostly on the west side of the county) is definitely from England. Mr. California's group has been in the southeastern corner of the county since at least the late 1850's.) His brick wall was his ancestor (William b. 1836 IL) with the 1922 death certificate. 1880 census listed William's father as born in NC. No census record has given England. When Mr. Calif. scanned the death certificate to me, I was struck by the seeming difference in ink for England, which was given as the place of birth for William's father. William's age was given as 86 but in lighter print were the numbers 85 - 9 - 12 for the age. (The place of death corresponds with the obituaries and followups in both local papers. This is the right William for Mr. Calif.) SOOO, I took the dea! th certificate to the local courthouse to see if England and the numbers had been written with different ink or what. It just didn't look right. The helpful clerk checked the copy against the original, and when she returned, she said all she could tell me was that the information on the scanned copy didn't match the original that was in the Recorder's Office. (In our courthouse, the clerks aren't allowed to provide verbal information about what is on certificates.) Mr. Calif. is planning to order a copy of the original from the Recorder's Office, at the local county level where it originated. It is possible that someone at the county level back in the 1920's assumed that the deceased was a member of the English family and added the word to the copy that was sent to Springfield. I agree that it is great to save money but in this case it would have been worth it to order the certificate from the county level. (We hope this is an exception to the norm.) The plan is to ! continue to search for a link between William and the surname family t hat was in the southeastern part of the county and possibly the two counties that adjoin that corner. Hope this will help someone else. Kathleen (STANFIELD) COOK

I'm searching for information on Riley Johnson, his first wife, son Will or William, Riley's parents & siblings. Any help finding traces of this family or a county in which to search would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Jenevia Lowery
Can you tell me where the siblings were born? As you must know by now, there are so many John Johnson's out there. In the 1870 census alone there are 697 in Illinois. My Johnson family had three, Jon, Johanness and John. It would help to know where they were born. I thought I'd start with the 1870 and move up to 1880 if they didn't appear. Have you searched the 1880 online at familysearch.com? Another great onliine database source is the Illinois State Archives. Joan in Illinois
