The 1850 Hopkins county Texas census shows that he was born in Alabama @ 1810 and that he married an Alcy S. b:1814 from TN.and that their children were born in TN. The oral history of the family says the family moved to Texas from KY, so they may have lived there before settling in Texas about 1848, I think. I have searched Alabama, KY,MS,MO,NC and TN census records, looking for the family prior to 1850, with no luck. This makes me think that Edward, may not have been his first name or that he has been hiding, or just missed. Below, I have pasted the census information for the family starting in 1850 and going through 1880. I descend through the Robert Long b:1854 branch. Her firt name has been recorded as Bridget, Fidelia,Bedelia, Adelia, Odelia, Delia, Delilah..... Lawrence, has been spelled as lawrenc, Lorance and a few others. In 1870 they were in Iowa, Mary RILEY(my GGrandmother, I do not Know my GGrandfathers name), Bridgets mother, was with them as a widow.Previous to that she was in the 1860 census with Thomas age 33, and Willam age 13, (depending on which census record you read, one has Thomas as 53 and William as 15)These RILEY's were also in Tompkins Township Warren County Illinois.(in 1860) According to census records Bridget came to the USA about 1843, she would have been a toddler. I cannot find anything at all for either family before the 1860 census. And obviously they were here as Lawrence and Bridget were married in 1856. The FITZSIMMONS name has been spelled so many different ways as has RILEY so its like looking for a needle in a haystack! These are two of my major brick walls and woud really appreciate an help. Hello List Ireceived the following from another list Iam on and thought it was really interesting.Thought it might be helpful to someone. Cris <snip> I just received this link from another genealogical mailing list. For those of you with Irish ancestors, it may well be worth a visit. I have no Irish ancestors that I know of but plan to explore it more soon, anyway. A description of the website and the link follows. From October 1831 through October 1921, the Boston Pilot newspaper printed a "Missing Friends" column with advertisements from people looking for "lost" friends and relatives who had emigrated from Ireland to the United States. This extraordinary collection of more than 31,438 records is available here as a searchable online database, which contains a text record for each ad that appeared in the Pilot. The advertisements contain the ordinary but revealing details about the missing person's life: the county and parish of their birth, when they left Ireland, the believed port of arrival in North America, their occupation, and a range of other personal information. Some records may have as many as 50 different data fields, while others may offer only a few details. The people who placed ads were often anxious family members in Ireland, or the wives, siblings, or parents of men who followed construction jobs on railroads or canals. These "Missing Friends" advertisements provide a window on the world of Irish immigration. http://infowanted.bc.edu/
