See below 1900 Chicago, Cook Co, IL. Looking for info abt, contact with living descendants of missing cousin, Lucy Ross PENLEY supposedly b April 1848, supposedly m abt 1872 William H? K? R? HILTON. Lucy's parents were William PENLEY and 2nd wife Hannah (ROSS) MELCHER 1818 - 1905. Hannah apparently had a son, Arthur S MELCHER from her previous marriage to ?? MELCHER. They supposedly had at least 2 ch b aft 1818: a dau Marie and a son whose name is not known. Was this Marie the Mariah in the 1850 Maine Census ? What happened to her ? I think I found William HILTON and Lucy Ross PENLEY in 1880 in Portland, ME where William is listed as age 40, b VT, a wholesale grocer, residing on Park St. Lucy is 31. There are 2 daus listed in 1880: Myra HILTON age 12 Gracie HILTON age 6 If the marriage date of 1872 is correct for William HILTON and Lucy Ross PENLEY, then Myra would appear to be William's dau from a previous marriage. But I cannot find William and Myra in the 1870 Maine Census. Did Myra or Gracie / Grace marry ? Who, when, where ? Were there any other children / siblings ? In Maine or Illinois ? When / where did William and / or Lucy die? buried? Most grateful for any addition, corrections, any help in finding any living descendants. Janice

Donna, In Illinois, death certs are not available after the year 1948 - unless you are a relative of that person. Then you have to go to the county in which the cert was issued and show your relationship to that person before they give you a copy of the cert... Sorry... See _http://cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/databases.html_ (http://cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/databases.html) for a list of searchable indexes and the available years. Of course, if you want a cert looked up in Illinois for 1916 - 1948, I can recommend two excellent resources: Molly -- _www.Mollx.com_ (http://www.Mollx.com) Molly will get you a copy of a death cert for about $4. You get the cert in a week. Cynthia -- _www.chicagogenealogy.com_ (http://www.chicagogenealogy.com) Cynthia can get you a copy of the death cert also, for, I think, the same price. You get the cert in about a week. Otherwise, you can go through the state of Illinois and pay about $20.00 and it takes up to 6 months to get the cert Good luck to you! Genealogyangel

Re: Steele or Steel surname Hello Karima: I was curious if your STEELE or STEEL line came from Ireland or Scotland? If so I would be interested to learn what you know about your Steele roots. I am of the Peter STEELE family that had Scot-Irish roots and settled in Eastern Pennsylvania. Peter Steele came to the US colonies most likely from Co. Antrim, Ireland and entered New Castle, Delaware in aprox. 1765. Peters children lived in the Wilkes-barre, PA area and have since spread accoss the U.S. My line came from Wilkes-barre to the then new territory of Nebraska. If your Steele line has any similarities I would be interested in talking to you.
