    2. Hi Brenda, Your Email sounds familiar. What kind of information do you need? There's a ton of information at the Illinois State Archives online databases. You must know the county they lived in since you have the copy of their marriage license. This is the address for the Archives. A global search just worked for me, just put in the last name and a comma. It will show you all the databases that have that surname. It's better not to put in the first name because it might be Charles, Chas. or even Charlie. _http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/databases.html_ (http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/databases.html) Joan

    1. Meaning of "Jno" in the U. S. Census
    2. I also sent a query to the U.S. Census Bureau about the abbreviation "Jno". From the answer below you can tell they weren't helpful. I do remember reading that "Jno" could stand for either John or Jonathan. I know it was on a genealogy website and it was years ago. I never saved the link or the information because I knew the first names of the people I wanted to find on the census. I wish now that I had. This website states the opposite: GenDocs Genealogy Services ~ Genealogical Abbreviations and Acronyms http://www.gendocs.demon.co.uk/abbr.html From Roots-L a mixed response, although most said John: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/roots-l/messages/00feb/126704 Nice little dissertation on this. "Jno" http://www.serv.net/~camel/wodehouse/jno.html Look at 'Transcribers notes': ISTG Vol 2 - RMS City of Berlin http://www.immigrantships.net/v2/1800v2/berlinco18761009.html JNO as 1st Name Family History http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,61521.from1117190148/topicseen.html Jno. I find it puzzling that where ever you see 'Jno' as the abbreviation for John, you find no abbreviation at all for Jonathan. From the above websites, I get the impression that 'Jno' was legally short for John but some people used it for Jonathan....which gets you nowhere!<g> I guess the best way to solve your individual 'Jno' meaning is to find him somewhere else with his full name written out. I would search using both John and Jonathan. 1. Re: explanation of term "lives complete" [Incident: 050613-000005]
    2. The U. S. Census bureau couldn't help with this. I checked the instructions for three census years and couldn't find anything that would fit 'lives complete'. I think 'liver complaint' sounds reasonable. There were no absolute standards of abbreviation for a lot of words then, especially considering how many census takers there were and the various levels of education. Some enumerators followed their instructions to the letter and some seemed to ignore them. Some of the instructions seem funny or prejudicial now. I found myself grinning or gasping...'How could they ask THAT?' 1. Re: [ILROOTS] 1855 and 1865 Illinois Census or Knox Co. Census
    2. Michael Neill
    3. The 1855 and 1865 IL state census are indexed at the Illinois State Archives. The index is NOT online. The archives will search it and the Family History Library may have it. These indexes are head of household only. Counties in Illinois did not conduct their own censuses. They may have duplicate copies of some censuses, but none that they performed themselves. 2. Chris Martin
    3. Hello I am looking for either a state wide census for Illinois in the years of 1855 and 1865. Do they exist? My ancestors lived in Knox and Peoria Counties. Did counties ever conduct their own censuses??? If you have any info about IL state censuses it would be a big help as my great great grandfather (Elias Oscar MARTIN) was born December of 1860, missing the 1860 Federal Census. 1. Re: [ILROOTS] Re: 'lives complete' from the 1880 U.S. Census
    2. It was in this column Maimed, Crippled, Bedridden, or otherwise disabled and it's for Anna Pearson, wife of Lars, in Thornton, Cook County, Illinois Have you followed the thread? Daraleen thinks it reads "liver complaint." Someone else wrote to me and said that 4 lines down there's a entry for "lung Complt" Maybe I misread lives for liver and I would never have though that complt would stand for complaint. I wasn't smart enough at the time to look further than the family I was researching. Thanks for your interest. It will be interesting to hear what they have to say. Joan

    1. Re: 'lives complete' from the 1880 U.S. Census
    2. I wrote to the U.S. Census Bureau about the term 'lives complete'. They would like a little more information. Specifically, what column did it appear under. They are assuming that if I don't reply within 48 hours that the issue is resolved. Since it was a query from someone else, I need that person to let me know so I can let the Census Bureau know. (Did you understand that? Kind of convoluted.)
