Actually Washington is beginning a really great job of digitizing their archives, below are the website. http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/ http://www.secstate.wa.gov/archives/ http://www.secstate.wa.gov/history/search.aspx http://www.rootsweb.com/~wasgs/wsgsproj.htm Cowlitz County: http://www.rootsweb.com/~walcolgs/cowlitz.htm I have a few others available if you are interested but they are pretty easy to find on a search. Since you are in Seattle you also have the Fiske Library and the National Archives which I understand are very close to each other, I hope to get up there some day to check it out. My cousin remembers Lena telling her about it, that she was 9 years old, and had to wear tags to communicate where she needed to go--she didn't speak any English. The story was, that Albert and Lena lived on the same street in the same village in Bohemia, but never knew eachother. Not sure how Lena ended up in Des Moines, or if she made it to her sister. I'll check on it. Haven't been able to find ANYTHING in the Czech Passenger lists or Ellis that would match Lena's description. It's hard, because many described Bohemia as being under Germany, Austria, or Hungary at that time...I know some Bohemians were German-Bohemians...it gets confusing when you read on the history of Czech Republic!

They have much research done on those two--SS applications, probate records..., but little is known about their siblings--Lena comes from a family of 13, her father remarried, and had 6 or 7 more children in addition to the ones he had with his first wife. Not even sure what ages Pauline's siblings were at the time, only 2 or 3 of Albert's siblings are known of.
And yet, in the 1920 census, I found a Martin H Adams, age 40, in Indian, Plumas county, California. His occupation was reported as gold miner. His marital status is divorced. He is born in Illinois as are both of his parents. This may have nothing to do with your family. -Cyndi Sweet

(and married although husband not with her-possibly military service or hospital?) she is 40yrs old born Illinois, father Germany, mother Ireland. Living with her is a son William 10yrs born Illinois, father Kentucky, mother Illinois. Have you checked a LDS Family History Center for a birth record for William Adams? They weren't all recorded at the time but sometimes a delayed birth when getting Social Security card may have been. Or if he married a church record may list parents.

I have just started doing research on my ancestors in Washington State. You can buy records, for $17 each, all certified. But you have to already know the date and place of the event. There is nothing at all like IRAD, where you can do a search and winnow things down to find what you want. There are a few free sites where volunteers have posted their records--for instance, one rural county has three years of a death index for 1903-1906, before the state began requiring their collection. But Googling for the death index brings up nothing but Ancestry and some of these piecemeal efforts. I was so spoiled when I was researching my Illinois ancestors and was able to find all kinds of data available free on IRAD. Sometimes I could even get the papers free from the lists or a kind volunteer who would go to a courthouse and look things up. Yes, a lot more is needed. But I was shocked to find that in my own state there is no official index AT ALL! Doris Waggoner Seattle, Washington -- "Don Kelly" <donkelly@grovenet.net> wrote: Thank you Krystal. William was born 05 Nov 1909 in Illinois, according to his death cert info. His first appearance in the census is in 1930, at a San Diego, California Navy base, and this corrborates his birth in Illinois. According to this census, his mother was also born in Illinois. I only have her maiden name, FRANKS, and varying stories of long ago saying that William always spoke fondly of her and referred to her as "Marie." Other rumors have it that her name was Mary Ellen. thus far, I can find neither hide nor hair of her. More rumor has it that William's father was named Martin. In the 1930 census, it shows William's father having been born in Kentucky. William died 14 Oct 1970, and left little for me to go on now that I have a keen interest in genealogy. TIA!! -Keith
