Address in 1930 Census: Chicago City, Cook County 6953-63 Woodlawn Avenue (seems to be a big place with a number of renters. With Wendell were Georgia, lowell, Jean Russell Bill in Denver
Wonder if anyone could help me find a street address for this family in 1930 Chicago. Wendell Phillips Georgia Lowell Jean (maybe) Russell They'd have been on the south side of Chicago, near East 70th Street. I'd like to print a picture of the building for my sister (if it still exists) from the Cook County Assessor's Office. Thanks for any help. Joan in Illinois
I think my sister is trying to identify old pictures for her family and she called this morning wanting to know if I knew what Wooded Island was previously called. I've googled all over the place and cannot find anything but Wooded Island. We lived in the Woodlawn area when she was a small child and I'm sure my parents would have taken her to Jackson Park many times. This would have been in the early 30's. Anyone with memories of this time/place? Joan in Illinois
Have you tried USgenweb.org, Douglas County. Were these grandparents Jewish perhaps? I notice that there 'a Hebrew Cemetery there. Maybe a written inquiry would get you somewhere. I have many Jewish friends and their roots are mainly in Russia. But if not, there are plenty more cemeteries to look at around Superior. There may be more information here as well. Give it a try. We had a family friend named Ballard DODD (might have been DODDS) I think he was from OK or somewhere in the Southern states ( I remember as a kid he had an "accent" ...Im in California..everybody has accents LOL). If he is in any way connected to you let me know and I'll fill you in on what I can. Or if anybody knows/knew him will you please let me know? Thank you Cris Atwater California

I wondered about both of those Johnson's as well, but their relationship really should have been recorded to Thomas if they were related to his wife. Johnson and Johanson are such common names. Where do you think your grandmother, Mamie, was in 1910? I haven't been able to find a 16 year old in 1910 with that name that looks like it could be her as a young married. Was she married by then? I am so excited about finally being able to fill in some of these big blank spots in the Dodd tree. I was especially thrilled to see my grandmother, Mamie , age 6, show up in the census. I wonder if Gilbert Johanson is the brother of Mamie's mother, Freda Johnson (or Johanson) as she was born in Sweden 1870 and died in ND 1894?

The only possible father I find in Illinois for Thomas Dodd, born 1862, is in 1860 (before any of your brothers were born). McDonough County, Prairie Twp., IL 1860 Thomas Dodd, 40, Farmer, 1000 land, 200 personal, born England Elizabeth, 35, born NY Thomas, 10, born NY in school Gertrude, 7, born NY, in school Nancy Stephens, 66, born NJ (possible mother-in-law?) By 1870, this Thomas could have died and another boy, named Thomas, could have been born to this family in 1862. Can't find a two-year old Thomas in 1880 at familysearch.com. Maybe someone else will have some luck. Joan
I was looking at this family too and noted brother Edward stayed in Steele City, Willow Lake Township until 1910. He was a grocery store agent and was a widow living with his daughter, Grace, 6. I can't find him later. Can't find Samuel in 1910 but in 1920 he appears to be in Williams County, Hazel Twp., ND, Age 51,Single and boarding with one O. E. Denton 36, Single, farmer, general farming. Just these two are in this household. Samuel doesn't have an occupation. Thomas, Laborer/farmer, appears in 1910, 47, Widowed and Married 1 for 5 Y, no children born to this marriage, to Cora, married 1, 5 Y, born KY, father OH, mother KY There are 2 hired hands and this is in Barnes County, ND, Twp 142, Range 58, April 10, 1910. Could not find in 1920--maybe went to Canada? I'll go back now and see about those Thomas Dodd's I found in Illinois who were born in England. The hard thing is that these boys were born between census years, but we may at least be able to come up with some possibilities. Joan

Please note following info from north dakota. June 18th- 20th 1900 census for Willow Lake, Steele county, N.D. Thomas is born dec of 1862, for marriage it has W or No. Born in Illinois his brother Edward is with him born 1860 in Missouri, brother Samuel feb of 1866 born in Illinois, and of course his daughter Mamie (looks like it could be Maine or Marnie) born Feb 1894 is 6 and born in north dakota. all farming. They have 2 servants with them, 40 year old Esther Johnson born in new york and 27 year old Gilbert(somewhat blurry) Johanson born in Sweden. I don't know if you have this info or not but it might help the time line for the family. In 1900 in june they are still in north dakota.
Ok, now we are getting somewhere. I found them in 1900 in North Dakota, Steele County, Willow Lake. He has two brothers living with him and his little daughter, Marnie, plus two servants and now we know his father was born in England. This should make it easier to track them. I'll give you the details tomorrow. I'm fading fast--past my bedtime. Joan
Is this another Thomas Dodd? The one born in 1862 in Illinois could not have fathered a child in 1870. ????????? Joan
