    2. In a message dated 8/3/05 10:51:44 A.M. Central Daylight Time, tillotso@yahoo.com writes: I am trying to locate my Grandfathers birth records, He was born in Illinois Could you clarify? Later you say your Grandfather was born in England--did you mean your Great Grandfather? And who was Gertie? Apparently George Mann's wife, because the wife of the man born in England was born in Holland? Anyway, I may have found a clue as to why George Mann Allison did not want you to look beyond him. There is a John P. Mann, in the 1910 Census for Randolph County, Chester Precinct. He is a prisoner at the Southern Illinois Penitentiary. He is a worker in the cell house. The last four columns (I can't read the headings, but I know they are online) are marked 0-9-5-X. No enumeration date was given. This was filled in with a thick pen so it is hard to be sure when numbers are given. He entered this country sometime in the 1890's. It looks as though he said he'd been here 16 years, but the emigration year really doesn't look like 1894. Perhaps you can view it yourself at your local library. Hope this may be of help. He was a son of Samuel and Eliza (Lister) Spikre, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of Virginia. Samuel Spikre spent most of his life on a farm near Terre Haute. He served two years in the Civil War, was wounded and brought back home, where he recovered. As a young man Noah W. Spikre removed from his native State to Greene County, Ill., where he engaged in farming and continued until his retirement from active life. He was an enterprising and ambitious farmer and became fairly successful in his operations. He located in Springfield, but on account of failing health moved to the country, where he died, May 9, 1891, on a farm near Roodhouse, Ill. His remains were interred at Richwood Cemetery. He was a devout member of the Christian Church and was affiliated with the church in Springfield located at Fifth and Jackson Streets. In politics he was a Republican, though he never took a very active part in public affairs. Mr. Spikre had won many friends and his loss was keenly felt by all who knew him. He was a man of strict integrity and reliability, actuated by high principles in his dealings with his fellow men. The marriage of Mr. Spikre occurred February 21, 1881, in Richwoods, Ill., when he was united with Miss Alice Hopper, a native of Pike County, Ill., born February 20, 1865, daughter of John and Mary (Lingo) Hopper, the former born in Greene County and the latter in Tennessee. John Hopper's father, Joshua Hopper, was one of the first settlers of Greene County, coming there from Kentucky with an ox team, in 1830, and at the time of his death owned 1,400 acres of land in Greene County. He became a prominent citizen in the community and the family was highly respected. Children as follows were born to Mr. and Mrs. Spikre: Roy Lee, unmarried and living in Wyoming; William F. is married, lives at 118 East Mason Street, Springfield, and has one son - Lloyd; Jesse C., a tailor, living at Litchfield, Ill., is married and has one daughter, Bettie L.; Noah F., unmarried and living with his mother, who owns the home at 705 East Cook Street. 1912 Index

From what I know so far, Jesse's father was Noah Spikre. There is a biography for Noah on the web somewhere. Jesse married Edna Kelly. She had several sisters, one of whom was Edith. Their mother was Loucinda Mayes Kelly (my birth name is Lucinda Lee Brown). Jesse and Edna had one child, Betty Lee who was my grandmother. Betty Lee married Carroll Semnacher (who later changed his name to Robert Armstrong). They divorced soon after my mother, Jo Ann was born. Do you think we may be talking about the same person?

    1. Cook County, Chicago - Early Chicago
    2. This website is based on the book .. A Compendium of the Early History of Chicago to the Year 1835, when the Indians left. The volume was self-published by the authors in the year 2000. The intent of book and website is to inform about all persons and all significant events for which historical records can be located. Any book on history, once printed, is set, and will in time become obsolete. This website, however, will be updated with the continuing stream of new information that ongoing research provides. Already, with reader participation, many of the stories have continued to enlarge. Such is the nature of historic records, that they are never finite. Once the time of the authors and present contributors has run out, our intention is that the work will be continued by a foundation established for this very purpose. GENEALOGY This website is a rich source of genealogical information. Typing the name of an early Chicago citizen or visitor into the SEARCH box will likely lead to one or more text portions dealing with family connections. http://www.earlychicago.com/

    2. The only thing I know to do in the case where information is this recent is to go to anywho.com and look up the surnames in IL. There were 9 Mehrken in IL and 31 Helmers. Then get out your map and see what is closest to Chenoa or Fairbury. You can also use this site to find the county for the different towns listed. _http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cg_ (http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cg) One of those Mehrken's must be related and could possibly lead you to Helmer relatives. Got parent's names as Ludwig Mulling (with an umlaut over the U) and Wilhelmine Grosch. I think his name was changed to Mulling from something German that sounds like Mulling (lots of choices). Original info is..... My Great grandfather, Charles Joseph Mulling was a banana boat ship captain stationed in New Orleans. He is said to have come from Swinemunde, Germany (Swinoujscie) which is on the border with Poland around 1878. He was just 14yrs. at the time. He dies in Belize on New Years day 1913 and is later moved to St. Vincent De Paul cemetary no. 1 on Louisa St. Has anyone ever heard of this or any Mulling family from this area?
