Illinois for a copy of the marriage license AND the marriage application (if available)? One of those documents might mention the maiden name. I found the following on the Secretary of State Illinois website for the Illinois State Archives. Go to the Marriage database. Adam Haas married Barbara Dressel 1896 - 4 - 23. (23 April 1896) License #8350. It would help if you could post more about your great grandmother, especially her date of birth and where she was born. It would also help to know what you know about the first marriage, such as where, when, and to whom. In the 1880 St. Clair Co. IL Federal Census, there was a Barbara Dressel who was born in 1862. Her parents were both born in Alsace. If this young lady is NOT your great grandmother, you will probably want to keep track of both of them so you won't get them confused. Sometimes it is as important to know whose you aren't as it is to know whose you are. It would be good to p! ost something on the St. Clair Co. Illinois message board. There are many folks named Druessel or Dressel in the marriage records, etc. Maybe some reader will know about your Barbara, too. Hope this helps a bit. That is a European term only. Here in the U.S., they are simply called mayor, if they were elected as such. Perhaps your ancestor who was "Lord Mayor" came to visit somewhere in Illinois and was recognized in a paper. You'd have to know which one in order to find which paper they are listed in. If you do know which one it was and where they were living, and what year, then let me know and I'll see about getting that paper and see what it says.
