    2. Did you notice: In the SSDI you spoke of..... RAYMOND G WILDERMUTH 9 Jun 1903 18 Apr 1991 87 1903 = year of birth 1991 = year of death. I think you were looking for someone born in 1919, so this does correlate with the SSDI date. However, perhaps you have a wrong year of birth. Bill in Denver

    1. [ILROOTS] Sangamon County Historical Society taking orders for last publication
    2. Karima
    3. SOCIETY TAKING ORDERS FOR LAST PUBLICATION The Sangamon County Genealogical Society is completing its final publication, for which it is currently taking orders. "Cemetery Names and Locations: Sangamon County, Illinois" will include maps of each township in the county and the locations of cemeteries by township. Each cemetery will have its own brief description and directions. Photos will be included for cemeteries that can still be located. "This book is an atlas and a location guide for people to go to the actual cemetery where their ancestors have been buried," said society president Dan Dixon. "Some of the cemeteries no longer have tombstones which can be read. Thus, a search of our previous transcribed cemetery books will be a better source to check when a specific date is being sought for the birth or death of a particular ancestor." All of the society's publications are available at the Sangamon Valley Collection at Lincoln Library. Orders for copies of "Cemetery Names and Locations" will be taken through December. Checks can be mailed to: Sangamon County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 1829, Springfield, IL 62705-1829. For more information about the society, e-mail Dan Dixon at [email protected] By Pete Sherman The State Journal-Register Nov 27, 2008

    1. [ILROOTS] Sangamon County Genealogical Society to shut down next month
    2. Karima
    3. SANGAMON COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY TO SHUT DOWN NEXT MONTH: Organization points to Internet, declining membership as reasons. After 40 years in existence, the Sangamon County Genealogical Society is shutting down next month. Declining membership and dues revenue, as well as the abundance of genealogical information available on the Internet, all contributed to the group's demise, its leaders said this week. "We are a nonprofit organization," said board member Tom Little. "Any money we make off of membership dues and publication sales goes right back into what we do." What the society has done over the years is impressive. Want a quick guide to marriages in Sangamon County from 1821 to 1840? No problem. How about an index of estate records in the county from 1821 to 1907? Easy. Who was buried in the Sangamon County Poor Farm Cemetery in Buffalo? Only the SCGS can tell you. Over the years, the society has created about 70 such indexes, bringing to light long-forgotten residents whose identities might provide that vital clue to a family history - or history itself. While all of these resources are available for sale, the society also has given copies to the Sangamon Valley Collection at Lincoln Library for people to use for free. "It's a great loss to the community - seriously," said city historian Curtis Mann, who oversees the Sangamon Valley Collection. "The hours they spent at cemeteries, digging up stones, capturing information. There are very determined people in that organization, very faithful workers. They need a round of applause for what they did. They made my job a lot easier. It takes forever to abstract those things." Despite the amount of genealogical information available on the Internet, Mann said, local genealogical societies often do research that no one else does. "The cemetery records are number one," Mann said. "They are not available anywhere online." Members acknowledged the work sometimes was a burden. "These are people who take long weekends and spend their vacations hitting courthouse records, newspaper archives, cemeteries. We really like it," said Little, who works in computer support for the Illinois Department of Central Management Services. "But there's a little bit of burnout. It also takes time away from researching your own family." The society had 350 to 400 members when Little and his wife, Lori, joined 14 years ago. Dan Dixon, who works in the Illinois State Library stacks and who has been society president since 1995, said there now are about 230. Members pay $15 a year in dues. For years, the society has operated a small office and research center at 11th and Knox streets. It costs about $1,000 a month to pay for the building, where the society's publications also are stored. Next month, the society would have had to begin dipping into its savings to pay for rent and office expenses. "It was in the past two years that we had to start taking a hard look at it - the steady drop in membership," Little said. "The money in the bank - we were going to run it down to zero." Little and Dixon were at the society's office Tuesday, clearing out what little is still there. Dixon drove to a nearby recycling center to dispose of stacks of materials. The office, which the society would open to the public on certain days, also was a place people could visit to tap into the knowledge society members accrued over the years in their encounters with genealogical dead ends and lost scents. "We know how to break through that brick wall," Little said. Dixon said the group is giving the Sangamon Valley Society and the Decatur Genealogical Society a chance to take whatever they want for their own collections. Most of what remains in the society's bank account, which Dixon said is in the "thousands," will be donated to the Sangamon Valley Collection. "We'll put it into a special account with the library foundation and use it toward special projects that go beyond our budgetary limits," Mann said. For instance, he said, the library might use part of the society's donation to transfer vintage film footage into digital files. "I'm going to miss them. I really am," Mann said. "They did a fine service for this community. Down the line, when someone comes in and looks at this stuff, they're going to realize all the work that went into it."
