The people who came to Cordova came by wagon train. :-) straight west from Ohio. Either that, or they came 'down' the river from Dubuque. I know that sounds odd, but Fort Prairie Duschene, Wisconsin was one of the earliest forts from the 1700s at the top of the Mississippi River. There was quite a contingent there and people once there, spread down into Galena, and then down to Savannah and Cordova. I've tripped across many a Byer tombstone in the Cordova cemetery, having grown up there till I was about 10. 99% of the people buried there are related to me, some way or the other. I have a cemetery listing if you ever need it. My own ancestor, Claus Heinrich Moeller (Miller) came in 1860 and Hans Paulsen Hansen and Iver Carstensen joined him nearby within a year or so. The Miller's once owned Cherryldale farm, now known as the "Saddle Club." I have an intersting old photo of a family reunion of the Miller/Carstensen/Hansen clan taken in 1900 in front of the Saddle Club. If I can ever be of assistance in the Cordova area, let me know. Just curious, does anyone have a copy of the Cordova History written back in the 60s or 70s by a woman in Cordova? I had one and lost it long ago. The story of the settlers is in that.
