I am looking for the parents of John B. Cain. John was born on April 7, 1804. He was born near Amwell, Hunterdon County, NJ. In 1850 John and his family moved to Hillsdale, Rock Island County, IL. I believe John had a brother named Joseph born around May 20, 1797. On January 8, 1824, John married Anna Myers (daughter of Albertus and Anna (Hann) Myers). They were married by Rev. Israel Poulson of the Dunkard Church. I do not know if John was born into this Church. After John and family moved to Illinois they became Lutherans or Methodists. John, Anna, and Joseph are buried in the Bethesda Cemetery near Hillsdale. John and Anna had six children: Wesley, Ephraim, Sarah, Hiram, John, and Hannah. All were apparently born near West Amwell. Ephraim (my relation) married Jane Elizabeth Hart in Hopewell on October 9, 1850. Shortly afterward John, Anna, and all their children (including their spouses) moved to Hillsdale, IL. Wesley Cain married Mary Catherine Quick in 1847. Here is an excerpt from Rock Island County Biographical History: The family set forth for Illinois in 1850, traveling overland to Pittsburg, where they embarked with their teams on a steamboat, and journeyed the rest of the distance on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, landing at Cordova, in the county of their destination, in the month of November of the same year. The father rented a farm in Canoe Creek Township, on which they lived one year. In 1852 the senior Cain entered 200 acres of land on section 20 Of the same township, and also bought 40 acres on the same. On the latter tract 15 acres had been broken. No other improvements had been made, and the new owner proceeded to build a log house, and to otherwise improve the condition of his estate. His sons, John and Hiram were old enough to aid materially in the work of placing the home farm in profitable condition, and assisted in so doing until 1859, when the latter went to California. The former has since occupied the homestead, in company with his father, who died Aug. 22, 1885. In 1867 he built the present large farm house, and in 1880 he built a barn. The son has bought additional land, and the place now contains 325 acres. The brothers are engaged in raising fine cattle, and show some good specimens of Short-horn breed. I have been trying to identify John's parents for two years now and I am running out of Ideas. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Bruce Hoye (Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandson of John B. Cain) homer.hoye@gte.net <mailto:homer.hoye@gte.net>

If they left in 1850 they might appear. Certainly in 1840. I don't think you're going to find it in Illinois. I'd start in New Jersey.
