We are proud to announce the formation of the Eastern Iowa Genealogical Society. (www.aciie.com/eigs/) The EIGS is unaffliated with any other online genealogical group or state association and is currently seeking 501(c)3 non-profit status so that they may obtain grants and funding for transcription projects. We hope to make available, online and free to the public, vital records (up to 1880), land and probate indexes, cemetery indexes, civil war and other military indexes, naturalization, orphan train and census records for the area of Eastern Iowa which includes 10 counties, Cedar, Clinton, Dubuque, Delaware, Linn, Johnson, Jones, Muscatine, Scott, and Jackson. We will also reference materials in the Illinois counties which border these counties. We do not mean to duplicate other sites, however we've found that the political restrictions and affiliations of some of the organized groups have make it difficult to present information in a manner which invites construction criticism and participation, and still make it freely available to the public. All of the 10 county genealogical societies will be given automatic membership and research requests will be forwarded to the different groups so that they may continue their research and fund raising efforts. We will do our best not to infringe on other's rights and projects, which is why we are only listing 'indexes' and not full records. If you are currently working on a project, we will gladly reference your projects in lieu of our own and concentrate on other missing projects. If you need funding, or web space for a project you are currently working on, please let us know. We'll gladly give you space for presenting your material and assist you in finding funding. There is no mailing list, however we will be sending out a hard copy and email version newsletter on a quarterly basis. There will also be semi-annual workshops held to discuss research methods, current projects and record availability. If you would like to join as an individual member (no costs or fees!) please send an email to simonsez@n-connect.net I look forward to hearing from you! Director Eastern Iowa Genealogical Society
