On my cousin's death certificate, it lists "Imp. Facoty " as the place he worked. He was a metalurgist. This was in the late 30's, early 40's. Would that be Imperial Factory? Does it still exist and does anyone have the address? I assume it was in Rock Island, since he lived there. Thanks. Noreen
That would probably mean Implement Factory, as in farm implements such as John Deere or International Harvester. Both were huge plants here in the area and employed thousands of workers. Glenda, Just saw your post about the Implement Co's in Rock Island. Would you by any chance know anything about "The BUFORD Plow Factory" that was started by Charles Buford in the 1840's or so and was in business in 1880 when it was destroyed by fire. It was under the direction of Basil and Major Louis M. Buford at the time of the fire. Hi, I found a photo in my grandmother's photo album. The pix is of a young lady, Carrie Kendall. I am pretty certain it was taken in 1918. And from the other photos, I am pretty sure it was taken in or around Rock Island County. If anyone is interested in a copy of the photo, please email me privately. Jean
On 26 April, the Quad Cities will salute their long forgotten heroes, the veterans of the Korean War. Emily, Maybe this will help. In Cordova Cemetery: WILLIAMS, Maurice R., 1861 - 1931 Ernest R., 1864 - 1923 Frances S., 1864 = 1923 PRINCE/WILLIAMS, Susan, b. 1900 Illinois Census: only Maurice Williams listed is 50 year old boarder in cook county who was born in Wales-but you might want to check Iowa based on the information below: Let me know if you need the lookup for Iowa, I can try to find it. Illinois, ROCK ISLAND, Roll 320 Book 1, Page 130b Cordova Township 1910 Federal Census Williams, Maurice R. 48 years, married 13 years, born Illinois, parents born England, Farmer Williams, Frances S. (wife) 41, bore 3 children, 3 children alive, born in Iowa, parents CT and France Leonard (son)12 years born in Iowa Joseph M. (son) 7 born ILL Harriet M (daughter) 5 born ILL It is very hard to make out on the census page but looks like they lived on Rivers Road. also, their next door neighbor was: Williams, Ernest R. 46 b in Iowa, parents England. Could just be a coincidence. Hope this helps, Jill in (humid warm sunny tropical) Guam
This is my gggrandfather. My mother does not remember her grandmothers name. I am hoping that it might be in an obituary somewhere that would list his wife's name. They lived just outside Cordova (Mom says that thier land was taken over for a nuclear power plant). As far as we know, the whole family is buried in a cemetary in Cordova (there is a Williams family plot), but I have never been there and neither has my mother. Here is what I know: Maurice Reginald Williams Born: 12-10-1862 Married - ? It is not in the statewide marriage index Children: George Francis Leonard Williams Born Abt 1898? Roland Williams Born Abt 1903? Harriet Margaret Williams (my grandmother)born 1-7-1905 He died 7-17-1931 (per the state index, haven't sent for the info yet)in Cordova Twp. In the index his name is spelled Morice. His wife died in 1956 or 1957 in Cordova Twp In case this helps, here is what I know about Maurice's parents: Robert Strong Williams - listed birthplace on 1880 census index on familysearch.org is Denmark May have gone to California for gold rush. That is a family story and he is missing on 1880 census but his wife is still listed as married) Susan Bland Prince Birthplace Kingston Jamaica Married June 1, 1859 in Davenport IA Died 12-24-1906 in Cordova Rock Island IL Children: Marion Eliza Williams born 3-27-1860 Maurice Reginald Williams born 12-10-1862 Ernest Williams born 3-26-1864 George Williams born 7-27-1866 If you want/need any additional info on Susan Prince or her other children, just ask. I have some info on them. All this information comes from a letter written by George Francis Leonards wife about 6 months before she died (except for where noted). I do not have any evidence that these dates are true (we are just starting our research). We got started on this because my son is doing a 4H genealogy project, and he needs to know the information on his great grandparents. So, actually, I am writing this request for him (we don't allow him to e-mail strangers :-) I hope someone out there can help us! One further thing: Does anyone have the book, Cordova Illinois, Then and Now? According to the library web site where they sell the book, the surname Williams is in the book. Funds are very limited right now, I don't want to buy the book if it isn't our branch of the family listed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much, Emily Morgan in snowy Ohio

Stephanie I wasn't able to find George in Mercer County, but here is some info that may or may not help. According to the death record, a George O. Strong died on July 31, 1946 in Dwight, Illinois in Livingston County. A Nora Strong died on September 29, 1945 in Decatur, Illinois in Macon County. Quite a ways apart from each other, but, who knows, may be a clue. Would you have any Brunswigs in your census from Rock Island? Thanks Rae Ann [email protected]
And for my Hobert cousins! For all those related to the Thomas/Hobert/Thornton crew who ended up in Rock Island and Muscatine counties, I finished researching all the records in Greene County, Tennessee where our renegade relatives came from. In the 1836 tax lists they're listed in Horse Creek by the number of squirrel scalps they had. :-) I have a complete family history printed out and available, with pictures of the area and everything. The Bailey/Weems/Thomas/Hobert and collateral lines. The Weems line goes all the back to Robert the Bruce, and from there to Adam (if you believe it can be done.) The Hoberts are still stuck in Youghall, County Cork, Ireland, but am workin on it with a cousin in Oregon. Would gladly send you the file or a hard copy of anything if you send me your address. Love to all! Diana Hobert-Hanson-Muir Atlanta, GA 3412 Mission Ridge Circle Atlanta, GA 30339 770-438-8481
