You'd think so wouldn't you, personally I wouldn't know first hand, I just made note of an exchange I came across on the net about a year ago, and emailed them the location. Beyond that I haven't had any particular interest in it in regards to my own research so haven't gone in to it to see if there was anything else available. And if you've ever had anything to do with these big companies, then you know how much fun it can be to get a question answered. :) >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [RockIsl'd] Watertown St Hosp - type of hospital? >Date: Sun, 21 Sep 2003 12:21:09 EDT > >If the John Deere company paid to move these people, wouldn't they have >some >kind of records? > >Cathy > > >==== ILROCKIS Mailing List ==== >~ SUBJECT LINES ~ >Think about it!! Right but those moved, well I guess they haven't been able to locate a list as to just which ones they were or which burial site belongs to who. Guess I'm going to have to find my notes to get the name of the cemetery they were supposedly moved too. >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [RockIsl'd] Watertown St Hosp - type of hospital? >Date: Sun, 21 Sep 2003 09:33:03 EDT > >There is list of all the people that are buried in the East Moline State >Hospital Cemetery at the Rock Island County Historical Society Library. >Bev > > >==== ILROCKIS Mailing List ==== >*** Tired of this LIST? Awww maybe that's what they were trying to say. As far as I know there is no new museum. There is the Rock Island Historical Society located behind the Butterworth Center in Moline, IL. It consists of an old house which has been turned into a museum and a newer section holding all old records, newspapers, etc. I was just there recently. They recently moved all old records from the Moline Public Library to the Rock Island Historical Society. I hope this is clear for you. The messages were very confusing. I'm just going by what I've been told, no one was susre just what it was all about or what all they had there. Just that they'd consolidated the surrounding areas records. I must say, this whole topic is VERY confusing for one reading it and not living in the Rock Island area......I cannot determine which of you is correct or if I am just not understanding the messages. Is there actually a new building? Has the Rock Island Historical Building acquired new microfilms and documents and relocated them from the Library into their own building? Is the Library next door to the Rock Island Historical Building and now they are working together? Is the Rock Island Historical Building in the same building as the Library? As you can see I am quite confused as all of the above questions relate directly to conclusions I have come to from the variety of e-mails responding the the statement that there is a new museum or geneology based structure in Moline. I suspect if I am confused others are also. I would like to know how to access these documents, newspapers, etc. Which address and building name does one write to. I intend on visiting in the next year and would like to know if these are two separate locations or one? There is list of all the people that are buried in the East Moline State Hospital Cemetery at the Rock Island County Historical Society Library. Bev
The address of the Rock Island County Historical Society is 822 - 11th Avenue, Moline. It has been there for many years. They just recently acquired the Genealogy Section of the Moline Public Library. They have many old newspapers including the Port Byron Globe, Census on microfilm, biographies, Marriage Records from 1833 to 1900, Cemetery Readings, City Directories, 40,500 names in their obituary database, Civil War Records and many other records of Rock Island County. You are talking about The Rock Island Historical Society as the library is a new building but connected to the Historical House which is a museum. Marilyn IL

Patients without family or resources weren't so lucky I'm afraid. John Deere Company were supposedly the ones to pay for the bodies to be moved. Sure would have made it easier for some folks to find their loved ones if someone had thought to document it properly. I can't remember what cemetery they were moved too, but I'm sure it's somewhere in my notes; I just have so many of them it'd probably take me two life times to find it. :) If your loved one back then had family then chances are you will find them, just don't give up. :) Linda >From: "albertsu" <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [RockIsl'd] Watertown St Hosp - type of hospital? >Date: Sat, 20 Sep 2003 20:08:32 -0700 > >Thanks to those who have replied so far. >Being from IL, I rather thought the designation 'state hosp' meant >mostly the place for people with mental problems/disabilities. > >The only thing on the death cert that helps me think it is for >the person I'm trying to locate is the mention that his remains >were taken to Amboy, Lee, IL, which is where he came from. > Not cold hard proof, but helpful nonetheless. Watertown was the mental hospital, and the records are probably going to be hard to access. It's my understanding that patients that died while patients there were for the most part buried in a plot of ground marked off especially for them. Then much later the ground was sold off for development and the folks there were disinterred and moved. It's also my understanding that no one at that time bothered to write down who all was moved. The buildings that once housed the hospital are now used as part of the prison there. I'm going to have to check in to this more as two places were mentioned the one on 11th ave and a place behind Butterworth Center. That's all I know for now, if I hear anything I'll write you the details. Thanks to those who have replied so far. Being from IL, I rather thought the designation 'state hosp' meant mostly the place for people with mental problems/disabilities. The only thing on the death cert that helps me think it is for the person I'm trying to locate is the mention that his remains were taken to Amboy, Lee, IL, which is where he came from. Hi I grew up here where Watertown is and it was a mental hospital as far as I always knew. It's a prison now. Barb I just checked out your link and it's the same place I was told about at the RI Library. I've been told they have a lot of things of interest. So I've just got to get in there. Alot of the records used to be out at Black Hawk but they thought they needed a building where they could house more, so if they've done that, then that's great. From what I'm told they opened up a new site and moved a lot of area artifacts in to the same building, I got the address but haven't looked up a number for them yet. It's called the Moline Historical Center and it's located at 822- 11th Ave. Someone said it just opened up earlier this year. Not sure if this is the same one they were talking about that's supposed to be located over behind the Butterworth Center. I got this address from one of the librarians in RI. Below the hill RI ends at about 45th Street and Moline picks up, so this building is right over the RI line (8 blocks) but south of the river on 11th. (That's in case you're unfamiliar with the area and are trying to locate the building for yourself) The RI Library has all the newspapers put out by the Argus and until more recent years they just didn't devote a lot of space to area obits. They were few and far between for some of the years I've already gone through. Thanks for the link I'll be sure to check it out as well as get with the newpapers still in business to see if they know anything about these smaller papers.
