Hello list, You sound like great helpers.. Searching for help with John MADISON, father of Allice Lucy aka Lucy A. MADISON Mother unknown Allice b. 7 June 1863 in Iowa?..or Illinois Married to Myron J. (Samuel) SULLIVAN 18 Nov 1878 in RI co. Had one child b. 1879 in Cleveland, Henry Co. Illinois May 15 1879. They moved to Guthrie Co. Ia. In 1880. The SULLIVAN family lived in the Edford area of Henry Co. I figure that she was born in the Quad city area, met Myron somehow, and they married very young in RI co. and said that she was 18. She was pregnant at the time or the child was premature. There is no trace of this child in the census records. I don't know a name, just that it was a female. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you for your time, Lynda
Hello all, Yes, please do change the subject titles.. This is very interesting and so helpful for those of searching the area.. Lynda -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, September 22, 2003 4:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [RockIsl'd] Re: older newspapers (Plus ? museum) In a message dated 9/22/2003 4:05:30 PM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: They do use good quality paper for their copies though, and look really official. Yes and they are from the original records. I have them for my parents and my grandparents and great grandparents also. And while all these things are available I still can't find my great grandmother's family and they were right here. She d. in childbirth very young and her name was Mary Ann Squires and the family was from New York. A little bit of history of the area is that we are the home of the Rock Island Railroad and many people came west with the railroad. My grandfather was born in VT and worked his way west chopping wood for the ties on the railroad. Also the city of Moline was mainly founded by Swedes and New Englanders and the city of Rock Island was founded by Irish and Southerners. Across the river is Davenport which was founded by Germans. We are called the Quad Cities which includes Moline, Rock Island, IL and Davenport and Bettendorf, IA and still there are many little towns surrounding us such as Coal Valley, Milan, Silvis, East Moline etc. In between IL and IA we have the Rock Island Arsenal which houses an army base and a weapons manufacturing facility. There is both a National Cemetery there as well as a Confederate cemetery since during the Civil War there was a prison on the Arsenal Island. Also we are the place of the Westernmost battle of the American Revolution as there was a battle between Clark's men (of Lewis and Clark) at the site of Blackhawk State Park. It seems that the Blackhawk Indians were supporting the British and thus the battle. There is a monument in the park now that explains this. There is also an Indian Museum in the park. This park overlooks the Rock River which is on the south side of the city. Do you know when it was torn down? Perhaps I can find something on micro film if I have the date. Aww so the book was a published work, that's fantastic. Is it still in print do you know? Wonder if one of the libraries would have it on their shelves. Gonna have to check out some of the branches when I get the chance to see what all they might have. Genealogy is like a drug, and it's my only addiction. lol Linda >From: "fern" <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [RockIsl'd] Re: older newspapers (Plus ? museum) >Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 15:54:37 -0600 > >Thanks Linda, one of the great research ladies at RICHS, Janet, has >already >sent me some pictures of the graves at the cemetery. Well I'm glad they were able to help you. You say the one house is a church now? I'll have to go by there when I get to the RI Library hopefully this week. Can't recall an old church at 18th, so the addresses would be a big help. I know there's one on about 20th street and 3rd or 4th avenue. Sounds like it might be close to the Broadway Historical District. Sure wish I had a battery for my camera right now. I feel lost without it for sure, as there's so many things I was using it for. :( Sounds like an interesting book, is it like a family journal or something that's actually been published? Bet it would be something the historical society would love a copy of. :) Also sounds like they had a fantastic relationship, with him buying her a town and all. :) Imagine that was somewhat of a rare thing back then, and a really unusual gift to be giving. Well they say there's a bit of history in every name, and she must have longed to travel if she thought enough of Spain to bring a bit of it home. :) Had she ever actually been to Spain? Well that makes me feel better, I was feelin' a bit of the ole shell shock. lol I just talked to another one of the referrence librarians and made another inquiry on all this. It's her thought that they simply remodeled then moved some of the area records in there. So that may account for someone giving me a different impression of the whole thing. :) Linda >From: Barbara Kelley <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [RockIsl'd] Re: older newspapers (Plus ? museum) >Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 11:29:31 -0500 > >Linda, > > >Shouldn't have been I was just passing information I'd been given, which > >included an address and I even elaborated saying I didn't know if this >was > >the same place as the one that was behind Butterworth Center that was >also > >mentioned. I'm going to follow up on all this as much as I can and will get back with you with whatever I'm able to turn up. :) I do recall hearing the name Bufford, just not anything about a House. Fern I just called Chippiannock cemetery as my curiosity got the best of me here. :) Talked to a young woman named Traci and according to their records Napoleon Bonaparte Bufford was born on January 13, 1807 and died on March 28, 1883; buried on March 31, 1883. He served on the Western Front. Said to have bought the town of Rockport for his wife, Rockport was later renamed Andalusia. Chiappiannock records also mentions his brother John, a Col. who was buried at West Point. First to be accorded huge burial ceremony at Washington D.C. There's a statue of him astride his horse 'Grey Eagle' at Gettysburg. If I can find out more from the Historical Society when they open up later this week I'll send the info on to you, and if I can find someone that stocks the right model battery for my camera, I'll try to get a picture of his burial site. But I haven't had any luck thus far so may have to order that off the net. Ya I haven't a clue what they're charging for death certificates, but not long ago they were like 7.00 for marriage certificates, then they went to 9, and a few weeks later 12. Hope that price holds for a while as I still have a number of other certificates I'd like to include in my files. They do use good quality paper for their copies though, and look really official. >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [RockIsl'd] Re: older newspapers (Plus ? museum) >Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 11:35:31 EDT > >In a message dated 9/22/2003 10:05:50 AM Central Standard Time, >[email protected] writes: >Just what vital records are you talking about? >The Court House doesn't have records of this nature. > >Talking about Birth, Marriage and Death records and I haven't gotten any >for >a while so the Price has gone up. In a message dated 9/22/2003 12:49:26 PM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: BUFORD. That is a very famous name in Rock Island. I believe that one was a General during the Civil War and there is a huge cemetery plot at Chippanick Cemetery. They were some of the early settlers of the town of Rock Island.
There was a cemetery on the grounds of the State Hospital and it was called Rest Haven. There is a list at the Rock Island County Historical Society that has that has the names of those buried there. However, many of the patients were taken back home to be buried and there is no record of those. Marilyn

Thanks Linda, one of the great research ladies at RICHS, Janet, has already sent me some pictures of the graves at the cemetery. I do so much appreciate the offer. I am interested in their old homes and if some one offers to take the pictures I will look up the old addresses. Ivy House, Napoleons home on the Mississippi River has been torn down but I don't know about Andalusia. The Charles Buford mansion at the head of 18th street is a church house now. BUFORD is spelled with just one 'f'. the 2 'f' Bufords are another family. The name is often mistakenly spelled with 2 'f's. Thanks for your offer to help.......Isn't genealogy a great hobby?? I am up dating the BUFORD book that my 2nd great Grand Uncle wrote and published in 1903 and it has taken on a life of it's own in that it keeps demanding more and more of me. I just called the Rock Island Library and talked to the Ref. Librarian there about your interest in Adalusia House. She'd never heard of it, and neither had I, but she suggested you call the Hist. Soc. 309-764-8590, but also let me know that they're only open Wed-Saturday 9-5. I think I have just about tapped out RICHS for their BUFORD information. It was from them that I first heard of Andalusia. From what I have Napoleon bout out a 'paper' town from eastern investors that were no longer interested in a bunch of property. He got it quite cheap and tried to establish a town or something of the sort and also built a family home that his wife Mary Ann Greenwood Pierce BUFORD teasingly named Andalusia which stands for a region in Southern Spain bordering the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, a spot where they had spent some time. Mary Ann was Napoleon's second marriage, his first wife and mother of his son Temple was Sarah Childs who died. I found the ladies at RICHS very helpful and friendly and they had quite a lot of info on my family. If you need some research done I recommend your contacting them. Their research money and dues is about all that keep them going and they do a good job. Yes, you are correct.. They came from Kentucky and back then Illinois was away out West!! John BUFORD came first to move to Illinois and he is the father of General Napoleon Bonaparte BUFORD and General John BUFORD jr. the hero of Gettysburg. His other two sons were later Mayors of Rock Island and his daughter was married to a General in the Civil War. At one time there were quite a few Buford's in Rock Island but I don't think there are any there now. They were all considerably interested in the growing and making of Rock Island as well as Coal Valley which they were heavily invested in too. There used to be a Buford Block in downtown Rock Island. I am of course interested in anything that has the Buford name on it. Thanks for writing....... Is there anyone on the list that lives in Rock Island that would be willing to look up a couple of old (1840's thru 1900) homes. If you have a digital :>} a picture would be wonderful. Would be willing to pay for your time. There is an old home called Andalusia that belonged to General Napoleon Bonaparte BUFORD. I do not have an address for that one. Talking about Birth, Marriage and Death records and I haven't gotten any for a while so the Price has gone up. I didn't know that until now. It has been about 5 years since I got the records but I have my parents' marriage and deaths. Also have my daughter's and her husband's birth and marriage. The Court House does have Divorce Records if they are needed. And I am sorry I mispoke as, yes, they are available at the County Building, NOT at the court house. Marilyn
Linda, >Shouldn't have been I was just passing information I'd been given, which >included an address and I even elaborated saying I didn't know if this was >the same place as the one that was behind Butterworth Center that was also >mentioned. Guess that happens when you try to be helpful, ya get >misunderstood. :) Don't be afraid to pass information on to any one. It helps to get more information, even if it needs to have some correction. All of us get to learn something about the area...even for those of us within the area. Another benefit of this information that you listed about the new museum possibility has really got the people to post more to the list!!! Both for the RICHS and Watertown Hospital that possibly wouldn't have been posted if you hadn't got it going with an answer for someone. :) Barb Kelley
