    3. Linda, General John who fought at Gettysburg and because he chose the location he chose he was able to defend Gettysburg and win the battle for the Union and defeat Lee. The statue there is of him standing with a pair of binoculars in his hand. There is a monument at West Point where he is buried but I do not recall any statue of him on his horse. If there is one I would like to know where it is. The statue of a man on a horse at Gettysburg is of Reynolds I think. The pictures we took at Gettysburg is in my files. If you want a picture of John I will e mail you and attach it to the e mail. I cannot send an attachment through the list. I think it is time we changed the subject line so the people who are not interested in our conversation will be able to delete and avoid having to open it. 3. Fern Can you clear something up for me? I just came across a long biography for John Buford CW hero that lists a different name for his mother. It's spelled Buford and half brothers are mentioned, so maybe Temple wasn't the only son of that first marriage???? Fern Buford Walker I am glad to hear that as my husband is a volunteer researcher there and works on Thursdays and Fridays. They are a nice group of people and the library is quite nice also.

    2. P.S. Calling cemetries is one of the best ways to get the real information and not many people even think of doing it. We have a very cooperative cemetery director here and he is very willing to look up the records. I have some cemetery records from PA and VT.

    2. In a message dated 9/22/2003 4:05:30 PM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: They do use good quality paper for their copies though, and look really official. Yes and they are from the original records. I have them for my parents and my grandparents and great grandparents also. And while all these things are available I still can't find my great grandmother's family and they were right here. She d. in childbirth very young and her name was Mary Ann Squires and the family was from New York. A little bit of history of the area is that we are the home of the Rock Island Railroad and many people came west with the railroad. My grandfather was born in VT and worked his way west chopping wood for the ties on the railroad. Also the city of Moline was mainly founded by Swedes and New Englanders and the city of Rock Island was founded by Irish and Southerners. Across the river is Davenport which was founded by Germans. We are called the Quad Cities which includes Moline, Rock Island, IL and Davenport and Bettendorf, IA and still there are many little towns surrounding us such as Coal Valley, Milan, Silvis, East Moline etc. In between IL and IA we have the Rock Island Arsenal which houses an army base and a weapons manufacturing facility. There is both a National Cemetery there as well as a Confederate cemetery since during the Civil War there was a prison on the Arsenal Island. Also we are the place of the Westernmost battle of the American Revolution as there was a battle between Clark's men (of Lewis and Clark) at the site of Blackhawk State Park. It seems that the Blackhawk Indians were supporting the British and thus the battle. There is a monument in the park now that explains this. There is also an Indian Museum in the park. This park overlooks the Rock River which is on the south side of the city. Marilyn

I'd really like to do a follow up on this one, you've tickled my curiosity here. :) Sorry but I can't remember all about the Bufords and would have to look it up at the Historical Society. I just know that there is a lot of information on the family and they were prominent people in Rock Island (the City - not the County).

    3. Fern Just did a search for that statue that Traci was telling me about, couldn't come up with anything of John on a horse, but found one of him standing by himself. I can send it in an attachment if you'd like. I'll keep looking, figuring if a cemetery would have these notations in their files then there has to be some substance to the entries. That statue has to be somewhere. :) Linda >From: "fern" <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [RockIsl'd] Re: older newspapers (Plus ? museum) >Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 15:54:37 -0600 > >Thanks Linda, one of the great research ladies at RICHS, Janet, has >already >sent me some pictures of the graves at the cemetery.
