    1. [ILROCKIS-L] Re: Visit
    2. Thank you all so much! I was overwhelmed by the fast response and your generous suggestions. I am on a "roll" in my genie hunting and it is all thanks to the wonderful people on these county mailing lists. For years, there were various stories about where we came from and who did what and I decided to seriously tackle this and find out once and for all. In the last six months have been able to solve several major family puzzles and find out what we only guessed at before _ and most of this courtesy of lots of nice folks on the web. And we found an elderly cousin in Kewanee who had no idea she had any living relatives; now she has several hundred. A sister, cousin & I are off to Kewanee on Wednesday, and then to Pt. Byron; hopefully we can get to Rock Island, too. Janet in Kansas City <Looking for McGuire, Daniels, Staff, Zinn, Zang, Collins in Henry, Stark, Rock Island and Adams counties in Illinois)

    1. [ILROCKIS-L] Pt. Byron visit
    2. Hello, List Need some advice. Am going to be in Pt. Byron later this week & wondered what resources available. Does the library have historical information, old newspapers, etc.? Is there a genealogical society? Is there a way to contact the Black Hawk Genealogical Society? Couldn't find a web link, just PO Box. I notice they had done cemetery lists for Rock Island County. Trying to find out what happened to my gggrandfather, who appears in the 1860 census there with family, but not afterwards, so assume he died between that census and 1870 when family moved to Kewanee. Thanks for any suggestions. Janet Kansas City

    1. [ILROCKIS-L] Marrriage Applications
    2. I just received a marriage certificate from the Rock Island County Clerk's office and I was wondering if anyone knew if they have Marriage applications at the same office and how much it is to get a copy. The marriage certificate was wonderful but I am looking for more information. I am grateful for any help anyone can give to me. Thanks Judy Alley.

Vital Records: Someone gives the information, usually from memory, to the recorder. The recorder writes what he thinks is said, sometimes influenced by an accent of the speaker, and his spelling ability. Someone else copies it into the record book. Then someone else copies it out to send to you. Sometimes it is also typed into an abstract which is published and put in some archive or the IGI. Is it any wonder......? Always try to collect at least three documents to support any fact, and even then, take it with a few grains of salt. Some people like to grade all document with a quality or accuracy level. 3. Dear List Members, As a member of the Rock Island mailing list, I have an important message to share with you all. And I regret this particular message. But seeing that we all place so much stock in the LEGAL DOCUMENTS such as Birth Certs, Death Certs, Marriage Certs.....well, I just needed to pass this info along. I just received my Mother's Death Certificate (she died a couple of weeks ago), and I was out-n-out HORRIFIED by the many ERRORS on that legal document. Errors. Times, addresses, dates, etc. had errors typed right there into what we always take to be "gospel truth". If my Mom's Death Certificate had errors on it, then that means there could be others out there with errors too. We base so much of our Ancestry info on those documents, and yet are they as accurate as we think? I'm thinking that if you have a Family Bible that is written in your great grandmother's handwriting, then you'd be better off believing the dates she'd written in there if they are different than the Birth Certificate you'd send away for & paid for about your grandfather's birthdate. I guess VITAL RECORDS & LEGAL DOCUMENTS don't quite mean what we'd all hoped. Sorry to burst your bubbles. Just thought I'd better let it be known. I hope this does not upset anyone. The Library has an obit file, you will have to ask to use it. there are also, abstracts of Wills in the Society collection.
