    1. [ILROCKIS-L] RootsWeb intermittent down/problems continues
    2. Gloria Frazier
    3. Msg below from Brian Leverich of RootsWeb received this morn..... gf ----- <MODE EMBARRASSED> Besides brief downs during the day while we recabled, we also had about a 1.5 hour down this evening. The cause of the down was that a friend of RootsWeb (not a staff member) who was in the NOC tripped over a power cable and disconnected it at both ends. We immediately plugged the cable back into the wall, but failed to notice it was also unplugged at the UPS. When the UPS ran out of battery power about 7 hours later, the microwave transceiver that connects us to the Internet failed. We tracked the problem down and fixed it as soon as we could. Sorry about the down time. ### Bad news and good news. The bad news is that we're moving the last of our servers from Anaheim to our new NOC in Bakersfield tomorrow. That means that several of our servers (GenConnect and Searches, among them) will be down for four or five hours. The good news is that this will complete our move out of Anaheim, and should basically fix this rocky period. After the move is complete, we'll be enjoying significantly more bandwidth and better facilities than we had in Anaheim. 1. [ILROCKIS-L] Naturalization - was Re: Your Web Page!

Do you know why I can not get a copy of the original >They give only the Clerk's notes from the original. I would think >the Freedom of Information Act is being Do you have a legal >opinion? Thank you, Corinne Gernaey taramark@netins.net I will give you my thoughts on naturalization records. First, I don't think courthouses were required to keep originals BUT if they didn't give the original papers to the person they were supposed to send back to the Federal agency because naturalization is a Federal law/requirement. Another thing is where the person was naturalized (will get to that further on down.) Courthouses can't keep everything. There is no room. At the same time, they are "greedy" with the records and want to keep them in the county and in today's world they could be turned over in IL to IRAD. Macoupin is one. The dome of the beautiful old courthouse is full of deteriorating records with no environmental control. And I have seen naturalization ledgers around 1910 listing spouse and children in the dome of Macoupin's courthouse. Most courthouses aren't as big as Macoupin's, it being a million dollar courthouse in the 1860's. So the smaller courthouses have burned, buried, given to libraries in the county old records or if they still have them they are in an unsafe place for the county to let you enter. About a year or so ago, one researcher in one IL courthouse found original naturalization papers still in leather "wraps" laying on the floor in a musty and mildewed room. Remember the ones I said which were suppose to be returned to the Federal agency..... One aging lady in one IL county who has helped many many researchers had at the last I heard a whole house full of old court records she is worrying about what will happen to them when she dies. I don't know about Rock Island but in Macoupin they do have ledger entries, as you mentioned, AVAILABLE of the naturalization and you can get copies. Where were was the declaration of intent? Where was the sponsorship? Where was the naturalization and where was the nearest Federal courthouse? In the 1800's early to mid, a person COULD file the intent in one county, show proof of "apprenticeship/sponsorship" in another county and be naturalized in another county. During this time period the actual naturalization HAD to be done at a Federal courthouse. A Federal courthouse might be quite a few miles away. As they built more Federal courthouses, it was done closer to "home." Then around the early 1900's, a Federal atty would go to the county and initiate the oath of allegiance at the courthouse. Macoupin residents went to St Louis to a Federal courthouse then one was built at Edwardsville then they went to the county courthouse from the direction in the above paragraph. Below is a msg I received on the St Louis Co maillist and which I had passed on with permission. This address and/or phone number might help you get closer to copies of papers. But before the message, let me defend the courthouses "just a little bit." The small courthouses only have enough money for today's work not old stuff like what we want. The court cases today require maybe 2 or 3 cubic feet of storage space for the case files of papers and they are required to keep case files for at least 20 years (I think.). In Macoupin, I have seen stacks of current case files required to be kept. Old stuff means little to a small budget and cost of rent/protection for old stuff. Well, that probably isn't much help, but you got my thoughts and if anyone finds something different, please correct me. Now, here is the message I thought might help someone or at least lead you in a direction. At 02:29 AM 5/26/99 -0500, you wrote: My thanks to the kind person who sent me info re obtaining naturalization papers. 1. [ILROCKIS-L] Conners, Tubbs, Goodrich
    2. We are looking for descendents and ancestors of Isaac Conners (D-1909) and Mary Tubbs Conners (married about 1869). They had 4 children; Clayton (married Ann), Lewis (sp), Amanda Russell and Della Goodrich (died 1918, influenza). The boys were listed in death notice. Clayton, Amanda. and Della of Watertown, and Louis of Rock Island. Isaac was a veterinarian. (My mother was told by Amanda that he had something to do with the Mental Institution. Maybe for working farm?) He sold patent medicine. He was a post master. He owned 30 properties throughout Rock Island County. He was born in VT; his father was born in VT, mother in Ireland, no names. Mary Tubbs Conners: all we know about her is that she was born in Illinois. According to 1900 Census, her father was born in NY, mother in VT, but don't know what their names are. We only have an approximate year as to marriage of Isaac and Mary (according to census). As for the children, we know that Clayton and wife Ann purchased one of the properties from Isaac. We cannot find either after the death of Isaac in 1909. Lewis we have no information at all. Della Conners Goodrich. She married a John Goodrich (real name??) sometime before 1909. There were 2 boys. Emery and William (B-1912). John was in and out of family unit. At one point he left Della and the boys, and changed his name, to what and where he went we don't know. Della died in 1918 of influenza. William was made a ward of the State because location of father was unknown. John came back eventually to claim William. Put him to work in the onion fields. Eventually William was made a ward of the State again. When he was 15-16 he ran away to Amanda's house in Peoria, and lived with her. John was a blacksmith. We were also told that John Goodrich had a family before he married Della (my great-grandmother), there again, where, who and the circumstances of the severance (divorce, death, or abandonment) are unknown. If anyone in Rocky Island County or anywhere for that matter, knows what happened to the boys, or know anything about the family please contact me. Paula

    3. FYI on current obits from the Rock Island area: Unfortunately, Quad-Cities Online, which is owned by the newspapers and is also an internet service provider were less than polite when it was suggested that they allow open access to their obituary section. IF you use QCOnline as your ISP you can access them. If you do not use them as your ISP (as in, you are not local) they will allow you access for $50 a year to their newspaper section which carries the obituaries. While many papers on the net offer free access to their current daily obits, the Rock Island area is not one. In fact, when approached about this, their marketing rep was downright RUDE. --- Gloria Frazier <glofra@townsqr.com> wrote: > These are two places I know about. > > http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilrockis/obit/obits.htm > > http://surhelp-bin.rootsweb.com/surindx.pl?gc=/USA/Il/RockIslandObits > > I have listed the old Rock Island county newspapers > on microfilm > available at the IL State Historical Library: > http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilrockis/address.htm#newspapers > You can get these films from ISHL on interlibrary > loan. > > I am sure some libraries in Rock Island County do > have copies of > the microfilms but I don't know which ones, yet.
