My husband's great grandmother was Ann Stapleton, born in Earlsheaton, Yorkshire in 1823, She had siblings who also came to Illinois, named James, Simon, Hannah and Lucy. Here is her obit: Genealogical Abstracts from the Port Byron Globe: Friday 9 December 1898: "Mrs W. J. Shepard died last Friday at her home in Port Byron, aged 76 years old. She was born Annie Stapleton on 12 December 1822 at Earls-Eaton (sic/Earlsheaton, Yorkshire), England. She came to America in 1840, settling first in Auburn NY (upstate, just south of Lake Ontario). She married W. J. Sheppard at Burden (sic - pobably Bergen) New Jersey in 1841 and they came to Illnois in 1851, stopping first at Unionville and then to Port Byron in 1855. She was a member of the Methodist Church. She is survived by 4 sons and three daughters: Samuel Sheppard of Des Moines, Iowa; William C. Sheppard, Frank M. Sheppard, Charles C. Sheppard of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Sue at home, Mrs. Jno. Schafer, Jr and Mrs B.A. Lamb of Port Byron. The funeral was Saturday at the home with burial in the Port Byron Cemetery. Note the reference: "Genealogical Abstracts from the Rock Island County Newspapers (Port Byron Globe)". I found this multi-volume set at the Rock Island Public Library and I think they would probably do your lookups for you, if another volunteer doesn't turn up. Also this is all on microfilm and available through the Family History Centers. I won't give you the numbers because there are 34 volumes and the numbers are not consecutive. Just look it up under Illinois, Rock Island - Genealogy. Since you are in Utah, perhaps it would be just as easy to go to the FHL, they have the set in book for as well, apparently. Anne

    3. Just passing info along. gf *************** Free for ten days, starting today (?), on Ancestry.com >From todays Ancestry Daily News: GEORGIA CHEROKEE LAND LOTTERY, 1838 Of all the states, Georgia has the distinction of being the only one to distribute parcels of land by lottery. This database is a listing of persons allotted land in 1838 from what was considered "Cherokee Land." Located in the northeastern part of the state, over 18,500 parcels were distributed by lottery in that year. Each record of this collection contains the individual's name, residence, and county. Additionally, it provides the district and section number of the parcel of land. For researchers of early Georgian ancestors, this can be an enlightening database. Bibliography: Smith, James F. We are proud to announce the formation of the Eastern Iowa Genealogical Society. (www.aciie.com/eigs/) The EIGS is unaffliated with any other online genealogical group or state association and is currently seeking 501(c)3 non-profit status so that they may obtain grants and funding for transcription projects. We hope to make available, online and free to the public, vital records (up to 1880), land and probate indexes, cemetery indexes, civil war and other military indexes, naturalization, orphan train and census records for the area of Eastern Iowa which includes 10 counties, Cedar, Clinton, Dubuque, Delaware, Linn, Johnson, Jones, Muscatine, Scott, and Jackson. We will also reference materials in the Illinois counties which border these counties. We do not mean to duplicate other sites, however we've found that the political restrictions and affiliations of some of the organized groups have make it difficult to present information in a manner which invites construction criticism and participation, and still make it freely available to the public. All of the 10 county genealogical societies will be given automatic membership and research requests will be forwarded to the different groups so that they may continue their research and fund raising efforts. We will do our best not to infringe on other's rights and projects, which is why we are only listing 'indexes' and not full records. If you are currently working on a project, we will gladly reference your projects in lieu of our own and concentrate on other missing projects. If you need funding, or web space for a project you are currently working on, please let us know. We'll gladly give you space for presenting your material and assist you in finding funding. There is no mailing list, however we will be sending out a hard copy and email version newsletter on a quarterly basis. There will also be semi-annual workshops held to discuss research methods, current projects and record availability. If you would like to join as an individual member (no costs or fees!) please send an email to simonsez@n-connect.net I look forward to hearing from you! Director Eastern Iowa Genealogical Society

    2. Kathryn Jennings
    3. Could anyone help with information about Joseph A. BIDDISON of Rock Island who was named in Rock Island Argus on Mon., 28 Dec 1868? The article states that a 2nd wife of my great grandfather was "formerly an inmate" with the Joseph A. BIDDISON family. Subsequent information shows that the couple were married at the BIDDISON home. The expression "formerly an inmate" seems unusual. Was this a boarding house? Thanks for helping. Kathryn Jennings
