I have just discovered that my ancestor purchased land in Rock Island back in 1820 and therefore I am new to this web site. If someone has the book, "The Past and Present of Rock Island County, Ill, 1877", could you please see if there is a mention of Thomas or Benjamin BURNHAM? Thank you Kathy
One thing I noticed, and just remembered, was that a lot of the very stauch Germans who lives at the north end of the county actually went all the way to Lyons, (north end of Clinton) to atend church because it was the nearest Lutheran church. My own great-grandmother (Mette Cathrina Carstensen, married to Hans Iver Hansen) did so every Sunday, while her husband (who wasn't much of a church goer) stayed at home and played horseshoes with his sons-in-laws! :-) Although she attended the Lyons Lutheran Church all her married life, she is buried in Cordova, along with 99% of her descendants and of course the Claus Heinrich Moeller (Miller) clan of 11 kids, assorted in-laws and grand-children! By the way, for anyone who is related and didn't know, Claus Heinrich Moeller is from Schoenberg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Yes, he had a brother (signed up for naturalization the same day he did in Davenport) and two sisters, one who married a Koepke and is buried in the Old German Cemetery in Davenport, down by the river. Another place to search for German burials!!!! Anyone who wants the Moeller (Miller) genealogy, please write. I also have all the Carstensen/Hansen too. Iver Carstensen was the 6th of that name, and the original was th King's royal forest ranger! Such fun! Hi! In the "Past and Present"book [1877] could you check for an Eberhard[t] MADER. He should have been farming somewhere in the greater Milan area. Many thanks. Elinor

Marc ... there is a long list of Martins, and another long list in the index of Maxwell. It would be a good idea if you would look at the book. It was reproduced in 1977 for the Blackhawk Genealogical Society in Rock Island, Illinois; so I imagine they would have a copy in their library. Maybe others that live in the Rock Island area can be more specific; as you see I live in Seattle, Washington. The information on the OLIN name is as follows: A.A. Olin, agent W.U.R.R.; Port Byron; born St. Lawrence Co., N.Y., 1851; came to this Co. 1873; is ticket, freight and express agent at W.U. depot, Port Byron; married Agnes B. Maxwell, of Port Byron, Ill., 1873; one child, Jesse B. Audrey Cox Vogelpohl Seattle, Washington "Marc L. Sorry, Bev ... none of your names are included in the index. Under Abbott there are listed: A.J., Fisher, Isaac, Sarah A. (Shepherd), T.F., Theodore, and Viola G. Thanks everyone for the information. What I did was call a Pt Bryon funeral home and they gave me the number to call on Rose Hill and also the Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton as it has a large number of Germans buried there and not far away. Thanks again everyone here on list is so helpful. Joyce Street __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com

I just had another thought about your Schwenneker and RoseHill/Sturdivan Cemetery (Zuma Township) query.. Also in Zuma Township are the Schafer and the Zuma Cemeteries. There are Schafers in both and also John Schwegler who married a Schafer daughter and was born in Baach, Weurttemberg, Germany. I do not know exactly where John Schwegler is buried, but probably in one or the other. All the Schafers (Father, mother and 12 children, 2 married) also came to Rock Island County in 1849-50 from somewhere in Weurttemberg. Schwagler (b. 1853) followed them later. There may be a similar connection with your Schwenneker whose seems to have come from the same area and settled nearly in RIC. It might help to compare notes. Anne Lamb
Hi Audry, In the book "The Past and Present of Rock Island County, Ill, 1877" could you please see if there is a Marmaduke ABBOTT. He was my GGGrandfather and came from Tipperary Ireland before 1860 and settled in Coal Valley, Rock Island Cty.,Ill. with his wife Margaret, Sons Wm. Henry and Marmaduke Jr. and daughters Fannie, Louisa and Isabella. Marmaduke Sr. must have died before 1878 as RI County clerk has no record of his death and they have records back to 1878 only. Hi Cindy, I may not be of much help to you, but Knox Co is just south of Rock Island Co. and the county seat is Galesburg. If I were physically able I would go down there and do the research for you, but have had one leg amputated and just a couple of weeks ago a by-pass, so I'm not moving too swiftly these days, but wanted you to know that Knox Co is NOT out of the realm of opportunity. I am in Arizona now, but live in Rock Island Co. so if you don't hear from ANYONE let me know and I will see if I can find a researcher for you.

Hello, Last time I obtained marriage certificates at the Rock Island County Court House [Oct '99] they cost $7.00 for a certified copy. There is no such thing as an uncertified copy in Rock Island Co. -- if you get a copy it is certified for some reason or other. The computerized reduction and copying often leaves much to be desired -- legibility can suffer greatly, handwriting becomes even less legible. Good Luck!
