Hello All: I just received a copy of a marriage license from my ancestor who was married in Rock Island in 1871. I called the office to see if there was a marriage application and there was none. On the bottom of the license it gives the name of the minister —C.C. Knowlton or Knowltin of the M. E. Church who performed the ceremony but it does not list exactly where the church was - the clerk informed me that they had to be married in Rock Island someplace but did not know exactly which town. Can anyone give me some suggestions as to find out exactly what church this minister was affiliated with. Thank you - Ahlive
There is a photo in today's Grand Island, NE newspaper of a RI Co. Courthouse employee hanging divorce papers up to dry in the basement of the courthouse. Were a lot of old documents important to genealogists damaged or destroyed by this water invasion of the basement there? John

Does anyone know anything about the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad which operated during the 1800's(i. e. where was it headquartered, did it play a big part in Rock Island County history, what cities in the County were company hubs, when did the railroad go out of business, or was it known by another name, what were its main lines. Anything of value. I am researching a gg granduncle, Michael O'Sullivan who was an engineer on the Chicago and Rock Island railroad in the 1850-60's whose Illinois residence is a mystery. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Ken Sullivan Canyon Lake, Ca
Even squatters would be included in the census records of Rock Island, even though they might not have owned property or paid taxes. This is on Ancestry.com - and is free for 10 days. I have also been typing a lot of new bio's from the "History of Davenport and Scott County" Many mention Rock Island and Rock Island County. These bio's are very professional compared to the 1882 book and genealogy lines go way back in a lot of them. ============================================================ DATABASE OF THE DAY (Free for 10 Days!) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ============================================================ ROCK ISLAND AND MOLINE, ILLINOIS DIRECTORIES, 1882-92 Located across the Mississippi River from Iowa in northern Illinois, Rock Island and Moline are sister cities that boasted a population of about 15,000 in 1890. This database is a collection of five directories for the city originally published between 1885 and 1892. It is a listing of city residents in those years. In addition to providing the residents' names, it provides their addresses and occupational information. It includes the names of more than 40,100 people, mostly heads of households. Hi! Could someone tell me who I would need to contact to get the plot numbers on a couple of graves at Riverside Cemetery in Moline? I'm from out of State and have relatives buried there. I have someone who has offered to go take pictures of the headstones for me if I can give them a location where the graves are located in the cemetery. If anyone could tell me who to contact, I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks! Bettye

Cindy, Hi...I checked out my census index for your guy, Thomas Willis...and find that in 1850, he appears in Rock Island County, Illinois, Dist 37 township page 259. I am VERY interested in movement between these two counties of Rock Island and Will Co Illinois in the years around 1840 to 1860. My gg grandfather, Pierce B. Bissell , birthplace unknown, born about 1816-20 moved between these two locations in 1850-53. I have placed people with the same VT , and Mass origins in both locations as well. There are some possible interesting coincidences regarding the name you requested...as in the locations I found it in various years. Please contact me directly to discuss some of this. I can help you possibly locate him in other censuses..,.and I would be very curious as to the exact location in 1860. 1850 Rock Island Thomas Willes 63 MD Polly 56 MD William 30- MD Albert 38 MD Jane Hill 35 MD Thomas Hill 10 ILL George 8 ILL Katherine 6 ILL Charles 4 ILL It would appear that Jane was a widowed daughter perhaps...and the kids were grandkids of old Thomas. Note...there appear to be other Willis's nearby...including a John Willes next door. There is also a Lambert Willes 33 MD and family there in Rock Island. In 1860....I find two likely possibilities Thomas S. Willes Ripley Co, Washington Twp, INDIANA page 488 Thomas Willis, Iroquois Co, Loda page 300 I am most interested in determining if your Thomas was the one in Iroquois Co...which is close to Will Co, right? If so...he appears just a few pages away from another Bissell family....one which I have connected back to those VT and Mass locations I referred to earlier. I don't see Thomas Willis in 1870. The closest I came to a Willes/Willis or variant spelling of the right age...was a Wm Willes 84 born NY Montgomery Co, Walshville Twp page 256. I may have him located in 1840....but not before that. I would certainly like to know where he was hanging out to see if there are any possible connections. Please share with me,if you would be so kind, what you might know about this guy and his wanderings. I would like to keep in touch Julie BISSELL Tupker
