Can anyone give me any information on the Orangemen's Picnic, that was held in a large oak grove of Rt. 67 (just outside Milan, Ill.) each July 12th during the mid-1800's through the early 1900's? My gr-gr-grandfather, George W. Kell, was said to have been an officer in the Orangemen here in the Edgington/Taylor Ridge area, but I have not been able to find much about the actual Orange Lodge itself. My father's brothers and sisters do remember attending the Orangemen's picnic each year, which always included a carnival, but they don't remember anything about the Orangemen's organization itself. This picnic corresponds with the annual July 12th celebration in Northern Ireland, commemorating the Protestant King William's victory over Catholic King James, and the famous annual Orange parades.
I would like to know the answer to that question as well. I would like to see if my ggrandfather was on the census. Richard the Illinois State Historical Library has Rock Island newspapers and they will send out the ones you want interlibrary loan I have ordered several from them. Have you library send for them stating the dates you want - there is a half page of newspaper names and dates available so can't put on here, but the address is Ill. State Hist. Library, Newspaper Microfilm Section, Old State Capitol, Springfield, Il 62701-1507. tel #217 785 7941. Maybe you could contact the Library and tell them what you want - they will give you instructions for your Library to request the films. Pat

Does any one know if their is a cemetery affiliated with this church, Immanuel in Rock Island? I would like to know if it (the cemetery) is recorded or if the church has the capability of looking up my families in their records. I believe both the Doering and Grams families were members of this church in the 1890 and early 1900s. Thanks for any information----Sharon

Am working on my husbands family from the Quad cities area. William Grams arrived from Germany (where?) in the US in 1888 according to the 1900 census he was married to a Radunz, first name unclear. Albert Grams born in 1881 in Germany married a Mira B. Doering, born in Iowa, married in Rock Island in 1909. Charles Lindstrand was married to a Johanna Carlson in 1890, both were born in Sweden, but married here, and are in the 1900 census where did they come from. The Tank Bruns connection is in Whiteside Cty, IL for the marriage of James Tank and Margarethe Bruns, but no other record there. A lot of Tanks seem to have gone to Iowa. Can any one help Sharon
