Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/og.2ADI/288 Message Board Post: ISO details on Levi NORTH, bn ca 1793 in ME, who arrived in IL during the mid-1820s. His name appears on land patent records of Randolph Co, IL, as early as 1827. He married Miss Catherine ALLEN there in 1829, and was the father of at least nine children. One of his sons later claimed there were actually twelve children - six of each gender - but that has not been verified. Levi served in a variety of vocations, including, but not limited to: farming, shoe manufacturing, teaching, and operating a ferry across the Okaw (aka Kaskaskia) River, the latter reportedly at the site of what is now the City of Evansville, IL. Catherine succumbed to cholera in the Fall of 1849, and Levi died sometime between 1851 and 1854. Their gravesites remain to be located, but are assumed to be somewhere in Randolph Co, IL. Their nine known children included: 1. Thomas (1829-1900) - teacher and Civil War vet; moved to Perry Co, IL, then Washington Co, IL, and finally Jackson Co, IL, where he married Mrs Joel (Sarah A CHRISMAN) WARD. Already the mother of 6 children, she bore another 4 for Thomas 2. Mary Ann "Polly'" (c.1833-1864) - Polly married widower Malcom G MAXWELL, Sr, in Perry Co, IL, 1856. Already the father of eight, Malcom would have another five children with Polly. He and Polly were buried at the Bethel Cemetery near Swanwick in Perry Co, as were other members of his family. 3. William (1835-1910) - farmer, store keeper, postmaster, cattle rancher, Civil War vet; Wm married Miss Nancy E MAXELL, d/o Malcom G MAXWELL, Sr, and 1st wife, Anna A DAVIS. After the births of four sons in IL, Wm moved his family to KS, where Nancy gave birth to a daughter. Wm and Nancy died in Cherokee Co, KS. 4. Jane (c.1837-?) - Jane married Charles SEIGLER (sp?) 1856 in Randolph Co, IL, and gave birth to a son, Charles Allen. They moved to Washington Co, IL, prior to 1860, and remained there. At the untimely death of her sister, Polly, Jane agreed to raise one of Polly's children. Jane died sometime between 1880 and 1900. 5. Maria(h) (c.1839-post 1865) - The last record of Maria was in an 1865 court file regarding the estate of her brother, Jasper, wherein it was claimed she had earlier left the State of TN, and married a man bearing the surname of WHEELER. Nothing else is known of her. 6. Levi (1840-1924) - coal miner, railroad worker, Civil War vet (two tours); Levi md Nancy Jane HUEY in St Louis Co, MO, between his tours in service, and they moved from Perry Co, IL, to St Clair Co, IL, where the survivors of their nine known children grew up. Levi and Nancy were buried at the Marissa Cemetery, St Clair Co. 7. Jasper (c.1842-1862) - farmer, Civil War vet; Jasper died of a fever at Ft Donelson, Dover, TN, but his remains may have been returned to IL for burial, where at least one tombstone was place in his memory; he never married; the court case involving his estate was a request to sell his farm to help settle his debts. 8. Robert (1846-1909) - cabinet maker, Civil War vet; Robert married Jemima A "Jane" MAXWELL, d/o Malcom G MAXWELL, Sr, and 1st wife, Anna A DAVIS. Robert and Jane moved to Washington Co, IL, where she gave birth to six children, four of whom survived childhood. This family moved to Saint Louis Co, MO, in 1891, and settled in what is now the City of Webster Groves. Robert, Jane, and three of their children were buried in the Forever Oak Hill Cem, Kirkwood, St Louis Co, MO. 9. Sarah Hannah (c.1848-post 1872) - following the deaths of her parents, Sarah became a ward of Wm C HUEY of Randolph Co, IL. She lived with him and his sister, Elizabeth HUEY, even after they relocated to Clay Co, IL. There, Sarah met and married James P DAVIS in 1872. Nothing further has been found on this couple as yet. Additional information is known about some descendants of Levi and Catherine (ALLEN) NORTH. Also, limited information is known about some of Catherine's relatives. However, I would welcome any news about Levi's background, or links to one or more of the above named individuals.
